If that is a deal breaker for you, I'm sorry to say that there's no way around it.
The game should only ask for an account outside of Steam when playing in MP. (For ladders, etc..)
To play solo, the Steam login should be sufficient and the new account be optional.
Genuinely wondering what the objection is. May be something I have not considered or are not aware of.
In most cases it's just a case of laziness, but there are people who are genuinely paranoid of someone stealing their data or something. This "registration process" is about as harmful as subscribing to an e-mail newsletter, but hey, you can't change some people's mind no matter what and that's fine.
I'm fine with any registration process and account creation as long as it doesn't involve running 3rd party software (e.g. Uplay, etc.).
Also, for the OP, these are the reasons you are creating an account:
1) The ability to contact developers and participate in Forum discussions on the game's official website
2) The ability to save any characters and loot filters on your account, meaning you keep them even if you somehow lose your Steam save file
3) The ability to add Friends in the game (not sure if that is already in the game or an upcoming feature) without adding them on Steam.
There might be more reasons, but these are just the ones I thought of off the top of my head.
1) Should be optional, works for hundreds of other games, why not here?
2) Never had an issue with cloud saves and I do switch between two devices often
3) I would understand this reason if the game was online only, like D3 or PoE (which does handle the login via steam)
- when you purchase the game you receive Cosmetic Points (for the future MTX shop) as well as a cosmetic pet (which you can use right now) so these need to be tied to some kind of account.
- the game can be played using both the Steam launcher or the games standalone launcher so it needs an account separate from Steam to accommodate this.
- while the game is primarily a single player experience in its current form, it is also testing certain online features for the multiplayer mode of the game (which is scheduled for later this year). User authentication, chat, friends list, ladder, etc are all available right now so an account is required to allow for this testing.
Those would be the biggest ones I can think of. It's also nice that the official forums use the same account -- which does give you a forum badge based on the supporter pack you purchased. Though, not a necessary feature.
Multiplayer ISN'T the only reason, loot filters, characters sheets and everything are tied to your account. Unless you are reeeeally careful about your data and don't register anyway, you're being way too picky to just take time debating rather than going this 20 seconds barrier.
If it's related to data security reason, I can only understand that's for sure!
+1 Respect
Also I don't understand why you people need to be so salty. This was a deal breaker for me and I just asked why is this a thing.
nope you're wrong, an EHG account isn't a recent requirement.
Social Features (account login/creation, chat, cosmetics, ladder, etc) were temporarily disabled for the 0.8 Patch release as EHG took additional time to upgrade their back-end infrastructure. This is why people who purchased the game during that time didn't have to create a Last Epoch account.
Patch 0.8c brought those Social Features back online, as reiterated in those patch notes:
Note: Last Epoch requires a Last Epoch account for all users.
If you are a new user since the release of Beta 0.8 you will now need to register an account with Beta 0.8c. You will be presented a registration screen upon entering the game after the update. This will not affect any saved data.
Source: 0.8c Patch Notes[forum.lastepoch.com]
However, the Steam store page has always stated that a Last Epoch account was necessary to play the game during this beta period:
Requires 3rd-Party Account: Last Epoch (Supports Linking to Steam Account)
This was certainly overlooked by many who purchased the game on Steam after Patch 0.8 released and have now been asked to create a Last Epoch account when starting the game since Patch 0.8c released, which restored all Social Features.
At launch, however, there will be both Offline-only and Online-only modes of the game so you may want to re-visit the game then to see if this requirement has changed.
As for the part were you appear to be a bit triggered by the fact that we disagree with you, and address us as "salty"; I have no idea if you're more or less accustomed , to be challenged over an opinion/statement, but usually, the moment you express one, by logic that open every sort of judgment by other people, (I live in a free country where freedom of speech at the moment is still in place), so whenever I see this kind of childish reaction by people who see whatever they've wrote or said, disproven by facts and/or logic, I'm a bit confused, while at the same time, this is simply another proof that we live in a snowflake's world where nothing can be said unless you're on the same wavelength, so to speak...
