With the way things are going, yes, consider it dead.
But like someone else said - you might never know.
In any case, as much as I liked MH, I prefer GE.
That being said, wish we had both..
Former God Eater and Freedom Wars developer Toshiyuki Yasui established a new studio called Tokyo Virtual Theory in 2019. Toshiyuki Yasui worked for Shift from 2003 until 2019 and was involved in the creation of God Eater, Freedom Wars and Code Vein.
His new studio announced three projects in 2022:
1. Research and development of the Theory Engine, described as an open platform network engine designed to create multiplayer online action games with high real-time performance without the need for a game server. This engine will be used in house but will also be licensed out to third parties.
2. Project Jaberwocky. This is some weird rhythm action game from the director of "Patapon.". I have no interest in this, so we're moving on.
3. Project Shaz. This is the exciting one. This is a new multiplayer, multiplatform action game from the development staff of God Eater. This is an entirely new ip created by Toshiyuki Yasui and Tomokazu Fukushima's Freedom Wars team. It is being developed using the Theory engine.
Producer: Toshiyuki Yasui (GOD EATER/Freedom Wars)
Scenario: Tomokazu Fukushima (METAL GEAR SOLID/Freedom Wars)
Director: Takenaga Nakasha (. hack//G.U.』
Art Director: Wankusaga (LORD of VERMILION/Fate/Grand Order)
Unfortunately the concept artist who created the key art that accompanied this announcement supposedly plagiarized from other artists, so this joyous announcement resulted in a stupid scandal. The key art, since removed, consisted of a lineup of stylish characters with what appeared to be armlets similar to those worn by characters in the God Eater series that also had a spiked chain attachment reminiscent of the thorn grappling device from Freedom Wars. It was elements used in the concept art of some of these characters that was apparently plagiarized, not the armlets or attachments. Hopefully, these accusations didn't kill the project before it could start walking.
Imagine a dream game like this, from the exact team of people we would want developing it to be shut down because of one lazy artist.
No news has been released about the game since this announcement that I know of. Like many small studios they have worked as a satellite team on projects from other studios, such as game planning and scenario writing for Kamitsubaki City under construction[uc.kamitsubaki.jp] and scenario writing for Redemption Reapers[rreapers.com].
I had never heard of Kamitsubaki City under construction, but I had to look it up after reading this and it seems like kind of a big deal in Japan. It is a mixed-media project consisting of songs, videos, a rhythm game, a visual novel game, a tabletop game as well as an entire anime scheduled to be released in 2025.
My only hope is that they use the revenue from this contract work to make Project Shaz a reality.
Sorry for the long post... I get a little excited when it comes to anything related to God Eater or Freedom Wars. I love them both.
