Co-op lobbies matchmake until the host is satisfied. They're open until the host starts it, then they're closed until everyone leaves and the host starts a request again.
The Assault Missions (or whatever they're called - it's been a long time) matchmake for 30s, before starting with or without people (remaining spaces are filled with bots). You can tell if someone's a bot because bots always join after the timer hits zero.
most likely 4 of them were not players, there was only one player, the remaining 4 avatar bots from the depths of the server + 2 defaults
I never understood this system where you can’t join a game that’s already started.
