Report a translation problem
As for what happened to the actual Far East branch, this game does not go into that. (yet) And since Fenrir's communications were pretty much broken by the ash blight, only by having characters come from there, or having the player moving to that branch, will we know what happened there.
As for the Baran captain, I also have that question. Hilda couldn't stand 10 minutes in a relatively low ash place, but this guy is casually waiting around in a place close to where the heaviest ash was. Baran being Baran, they may have made such tech to keep him alive possible. But the game does not say anything about anything, so for now I'll call it a plot hole.
Anyway, thank you all for discussing. One of GEs major strengths is its story and it would be really sad if there is something controversial. (and sorry for the bad english :D)
