I presume you're not talking about the Armory :-) I've always liked the chests in Crimson Fastness; usually entered from the exit so I would immediately be in that room with the 1-2 chests and the 4 badasses. You can go to the other areas from there as well, of course.
Sledge's Safehouse also makes a good farming area: there is one chest outside, one where the claptrap was, and one in the room opened by the claptrap (plus the lockers there). All this is accessible with just a few bandits in the way that you can just as well ignore.
New Haven has a bunch of "free" chests hidden inside the town, but those are white. I don't think they are worth it.
The Underpass: take a car and drive down the road to the bridge. There is a hut there on the left, home to a single badass bandit with a red chest. Also one of my favorites.
Every once in a while you DO come across chests that are still red chests, but can be reached quickly. I already listed the ones I could come up with quickly because I've visited them a lot. And sometimes these are "better" than the Armory simply because it takes quite a while to even get to the Armory, whereas making a trip to Underpass before going where I want to go is more feasible.
Also, an IMPORTANT part of farming has always been the shops. Shops are exceptionally good for providing (non-DLC3) class mods and shields (the class mod I'm using came from a shop, and it's a perfect (i.e. all max) ammo regenerating Mercenary; don't remember where my shield came from). Shops can also provide purple and orange weapons; my very first legendary that I found (but I didn't use it) came from a shop.
I'm not too fond of the Hyperion Gift Shop, but that could be because the very first DLC4 that I did was the PT2.5 at lvl 69, so maybe I just didn't care that much about the shop. I did get the impression that even though the chests are red they have been toned down, possibly for similar reasons as the New Haven chests. But that's just a feeling; it's not like the game gives you any indication of special chest parameters other than the chest type itself (white, red or lance).
There's also a hidden chest reachable from the Underpass waypoint, but it's hard to describe. You basically just race through a bunch of enemies (effectively ignoring them as they won't follow you anyway), onto a rocky ledge, jump down a cliff and get into a cavern with a chest. That chest is just an ordinary red chest, though, and it's a one-way trip (so you have to quit the game to get out, or die). I have occasionally done some "Underpass farming" -- checking the shop, getting the badass chest, then getting that chest, then quit and reload.
As a side note, during PT1 I *have* identified a special red chest, in that bandit camp on the mountainside with the bridge across the gully, where one of the 'get the weapon parts' quests is located. There is a chest that provided Lvl 20+ items, at a time when this was still in the far future. That chest is nothing special in PT2, though (as far as I can tell), it's just that the level is way above the normal level for that area in PT1.
