Well I have a retail version of the goty for borderlands, but it never came with a key.
I'd like to see if I could get an extra copy to give to my friends but the pc game never came with a cd key, unless all I need is the DLC key, that I still have.

No key = no activation.
DLC won't activate if you don't have a game key.
Extra copy for a friend? Buy on in store.

If you've got an original retail version of the game, just install the Borderlands granting tool. It will scan your disc and unlock the Steam version for you.

Go to Library > Tools > Borderlands Granting Tool

i have a retail one too
but i open the program and it says:
There was a problem while attempting to convert to Steam.

This could be your connection to Steam, or an internet timeout.

Please try again later - if the problem persists, reach out to support.2k.com

I gave you information, so what's the deal? Bad day, or you have different issues?

OK, let me go into details, because you clearly didn't understand a thing:

What I wrote applies here - no cd key = no activation. That's how it works.

Again - no key = no activation. If you want to gift this game to a friend you either buy a retail one and send him a key, or buy digitally on Steam.

Do you think they would allow FULL game activation just with a dlc key? That would lead to ppl buying a dlc key and expecting to unlock a full game. Makes little sense to me.

Now tell me, why did you bash me? I gave you short and consice information. Why did you call me $hit? Apologies maybe, when you calm down?

Are you sure it will work without CD key printed somewhere on the booklet? There must be a way to authorize the game, or you could just take that one copy, give it all you friends, and they could add the game to their libraries.

One of the comments:
You have to insert the original disk then install and run the "Granting Tool" in the "Tools" section. After that's completed, only then do you insert the code on your GOTY copy

Well, yesterday I just inserted the original disk, ran the Granting Tool, waited a few seconds and it just said I have an original copy of the game and there it was. Borderlands in my Steam Library.

I don't know how it works, since it could have many flaws...but it worked for me. And I'm the one who never got a CD key for my game, which was quite weird when I first saw it.

The process seems to be rather simple to me.

1. Use the granting tool to unlock the base game on your account using the DVD.
2. Activate the key provided in the manual like you would any other Steam key to add the DLCs to your account.

Maybe that if the game is already installed that it can see the license? Shot in the dark, but I find it odd that it came with no key code.

Yeah, I found it odd as well. At the back of my game manual there's just a Bioshock 2 announcement lol. :D

It seems that you're having trouble reading, so let me put it in cave speak so your tiny mind can comprehend. Retail goty no come with cd key, dlc key, I have.
2k no give cd key with goty borderlands, only dlc key, that i have.
what you tell me means absolutely nothing.

I'm gonna try it tomorrow, I still have the box for it and everything, so it should work I hope. I found it odd that they didn't have CD keys for Borderlands Goty.
