Any legal no-dvd patch?

I have bought the GOTY version from local retailer to play with my brother, but I found out the game needs DVD to play it.

Is there any legal NO-DVD patch?

If you activate the game on Steam instead of installing the discs, it'll be a legit Steam-game and then you don't need to insert the disc to play it. Bottom left of your Steam, you can "Add a game" and "Activate a game on Steam", then enter your serial code and voila! I has done the same with my retail Borderlands GOTY and it works flawless.
