Some games are capped at 60fps for stability reasons like certain games at above 60fps speed up or have physics problems like GTA SA or Fallout NV. If you are below 60 then you have a problem but at 60fps you are good to go.
oh okey:) thats a shame! but hey, 60fps are still good ;)

You think that laptop is bad, I'm still on a desktop with one gig of RAM that I built 10 years ago.

I used to run this in 800 x 600 trying to get a decent framerate, but now the monitor died and I had to buy a widescreen monitor, so the lowest I can do with a good aspect ratio is 1280 x 720.

The mobo would take up to four gig of RAM but I never got around to it, probably not worth it now.

Thank goodness this is the last year for this system, and I'll be on getting a new system soon.

That's your problem right there lol. Once you upgrade to that alienware you will be at a steady 60 fps or higher.

Serious question:

If you were shopping for a new PC now, what would you recommend for a desktop gaming rig?

I'm going to be buying a new system soon (I already got a new monitor recently) and I haven't even shopped for this sort of thing in a few years. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Doesn't anyone know what a community guide is?

There are two guides to help with frames per second that I could find and they explain about V-SYNC.

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=342566285

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=149866667

Further research shows that vsync is OFF my default in the .ini file you will be editing, so if you are having fps limitations it's caused by your GPU settings, not the game.

Open the WillowEngine.ini file in the My Documents ->My Games -> Borderlands -> Config file path and search for vsync and change it to true. For fps search for bsmoothframerate and change it to false or increase MaxSmoothedFrameRate to your desired fps (it'll still cap at the maximum that your monitor is set for though so setting for 200 fps won't cause the game to try to run at that but rather at 144 since that's your monitor's max).

If you have an NVIDIA graphics card, right click on your desktop - go to NVIDIA control panel - then go to manage 3D settings - program settings - select program to be customized - find borderlands.exe - then find vertical sync and set it to adaptive. You will notice a large difference! Good luck!

EDIT: I apologize, I did not pay attention to the question. If you're looking for a higher frame rate within Borderlands, just set vertical sync to off within the 3D settings following the same instructions above only where it says adaptive set to off. However, in my own experience, my monitor only has a 60hz refresh rate, so I have to leave it on adaptive, which greatly helps with the screen tearing.

Adpative? I've always set vsync to off. I'll try adaptive next time I play.

I apologize, I completely misread his question. Adaptive will just help with the screen tearing which is caused by borderlands being an older game and not having a vsync on/off option. If you're looking for a higher frame rate, you'll probably want it off, however, if your monitor cant keep up, you'll see screen tearing. Good luck!

Actually adaptive worked surprisingly well, giving me a near constant fps of 60-62 instead of my usual 49-60 fps.
It was a big improvement for me thank you.

Glad I could help! :vault:

It actually does have vsync but it's not available from within the game, you need to open the WillowEngine.ini like I mentioned above and change UseVsync=False to UseVsync=True (should be line 749 in notepad++ I believe) and to achieve fps over 60-62 change either MaxSmoothedFrameRate to the frame rate cap you want or bsmoothframerate to false which should default it to the max fps your monitor can handle but it won't try to smooth it i.e. less load (usually, like 99.99% of the time) but subject to some more frame dips/spikes but usually those are in high stress areas which would've likely caused some dips or spikes.
