You don't. It was shut down.

So owning a retail copy of Borderlands won't get you the remastered edition?

Correct, because you can no longer transfer the key to Steam
Anyone that does not currently have the games on steam will have to buy them.

I'm surprised so many people missed out on BL. I remember when it first came out, it was a HUGE deal. Front cover on Game Informer magazine. It was really the first game of it's kind. When it was actually released, it made the cover of Game Informer AGAIN, and got high ratings from pretty much every major player in gaming media at the time.

It was such a fun game, such a breath of fresh air. I mean, a first person SHOOTER looter? With millions of gun combinations? And an actual STORY to boot? Open world as well?

Man, BL was such a fantastic and unique idea when it first released!

I didn't miss out. I have a retail version of the game and even every single DLC code as either Mail or also as a retail version. I just didn't know you could / should add the game here on steam through a tool. Now that the remastered edition for free is a thing, I learned of the tool, but they removed it obvisously, which is why I can't get my hand on a free copy of it. I even own BL2 and the Pre-Sequel here on steam.

you could always try contacting gearbox and asking them for a steam key? since you do own a physical copy of the game with an activation key etc.

That's true, Gearbox don't make responsible if someone not claimed the game in those years. That means all that people will have to buy the game again.

I got the base game in that way a few years ago, only instead of inserting the retail CD, I downloaded the tool, opened the executable and got the game in the library, then I checked my activation keys and the game appeared as "free"

But here's my question, to those users who got it this way, the GOTY upgrade will also come or not? I still do not understand that point, I've been playing for ten hours :p

For what they say yes. the retail cd will be updated too if you have it activated in steam. So tomorrow you will get the update too.
