How bad is the Swearing in this game?
How bad is the swearing in Borderlands 1? Like what's the "worst" word used in the game, and is it an NPC that says it?

I ask because have a couple of tykes who are allowed to be exposed to violence but not over the top swearing, for the simple reason that being around swearing leads to swearing and it gets them in trouble at school.

Don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with swearing, I think it's a stupid taboo, but as long as other people in our culture punish kids for it I have to check.

there's no F-words, if that's what you're worried about. otherwise, the swearing is so-so. i think the worst is probably sh**
LunarGatta 2 ENE 2017 a las 11:07
This game is rated M. If they're below 18 or whatever the maturity age is for your country then don't let them play it, simple as that.

Roland says ♥♥♥♥♥ sometimes.
Brick says ♥♥♥♥♥ often.
Mordecai rarely says ♥♥♥♥.
Never heard lilith swear.

Edit: Quote this post to see the words, i can't be bothered to edit them.

I know the bandits call you an a hole sometimes, I forget if they also say the f word.

Thanks to Steam for making me have to talk like a toddler about this, because filters.

EDIT: Another potential point of concern is that the bandits are implied to commit sexual assault, and thus the "r word" is used at least once in mission text to refer to this. (I know everybody just clicks through that stuff, but still.) All in all, I think there's probably too much adult language in here of various kinds, if you're at all worried about kids repeating stuff. Sorry.

And yeah, I know the filter is there for a reason, but as an adult I find it frustrating at times.

OP made their reasoning pretty clear above, I don't see any reason to troll them over it.

a quote from MR TORGUE from bl2, but he is rarely in bl1 so it might be ok

"A LOT OF PEOPLE BEEN ASKING ME WHY MY VOICE BEEPS ALL THE F*CKIN TIME. THE TORGUE SHAREHOLDERS WIRED MY VOICEBOX WITH A DIGITAL CENSOR SO I CAN'T SAY STUFF LIKE SH*T, C*CK, OR P*SSY F*CKIN' D*CKBALLS! THATS HALF MY F*CKIN' VOCABULARY, IT'S ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ BULLSH*T!"

There are also some mild sexual themes, if that's part of your concern. Like... within the first hour you'll get to hear the intro song about prostitution, the game would not hesitate to inform you that some psycho has 3 balls, or a vile raider would make a handjob innuendo or two. Some reliable sources tell me that later in the game there will be a viagra spoof, also.
All in all though, barely any potentially offensive content is explicit (which I guess is part of the humour), and in general the game feels milder and less stressful than most other shooters. It's more about having a good time firing cool looking guns at cool looking enemies and feeling cool about yourself, so as long as your two charges can "handle" the juvenile nasty bits, it could be entertaining.
All that said, if I was tasked to handle a kid or two, I'd get them Rayman or some other "proper" colourful children's game with a local co-op, smiles and rainbow pooping unicorns. But that is me.

My only concern with swearing is that they'll do it at school, otherwise I wouldn't even care about that. The stuff about prostitution on the other hand, good point, they're too young to be exposed to stuff like that.

I don't believe in filtering their experiences too much though, only to the extent that it's necessary to keep them out of trouble. I grew up watching some pretty violent stuff and playing games like Mortal Kombat and Perfect Dark and I turned out alright. Too much stuff made for children is also... Well... It's stuff that would lower their IQ levels to play or watch.

not sure you turned out alright...you just necroed your own thread that was over half a year old. some would think this topic has been solved by now...

The reference that I mentioned is really vague if I recall correctly... it was one of those "you won't know unless you already know" type of things. So on that front I'm pretty sure you're safe.

I personally think Borderlands is dumb fun, with the empasis on dumb. Violence alone does not make the experience any more intellectual than any of the Lego games. Heck, even the universally derided Minecraft lets you create highly complex electric circuits and fully automated material factories. Now that is something to tickle one's brain cells with.
Games aside, lots of modern shows such as Adventure Time or Gravity Falls have gotten much more sophisticated compared to many older cartoons, too.
All in all, I don't believe that "violent = smart" and "tamed down = dumb" and I think you're not giving enough credit to modern things made with the younger audience in mind, but I suppose it's a matter of opinions.

Yeah that's a good point Borderlands isn't exactly a game that would make kids smarter, but I don't think games like that make kids any dumber either. I mean it's not Duke Nukem Forever, it's a shooter with loot, exploration, leveling mechanics, and something resembling a story.

Made for All Ages games like Mario Kart are great, but for kids that are growing up watching stuff like RWBY and playing games like Dynasty Warriors and Shadow of Mordor it's kind of hard for them to have fun with games made for the minds of three year olds.

There's like this No Man's Land for kids between the age of Three and Thirteen where there are just no age appropriate games beyond the usual Nintendo stuff.

My daughter actually plays Skyrim, I modded some stuff out of it or rather found a mod that did, I wish there were games like that without the sex and swearing.

I legit only have a problem with the swearing because it's habit forming and gets them in trouble at school, to me it's stupid that they even would. I don't have a problem with violence because they know the difference between fantasy violence and real violence. Sex is different because they're minors and it's hard wired into us in a way that violence isn't.

I like Scrubby Spammers reasoning.I just don't agree with the "violence isn't hard wired in us" statement. It's a part of survival.
