What about sledge?
Although this tactic might sound cheesy, it works for me:
Go to the main room where he spawns.
You will notice before you get to the main room there are two doors. Use them to your advantage.
Let him spot you and lure him to either door while shooting at him. You need to be in between the two doors while you're doing this.
When he starts attacking you, close the door on the side you're on and run to the other one and repeat the process until he's very low health (around 10% remaining)
At this point you can make your way out to the main room and finish him off.

It's a tactic to use if you are under-levelled.
Yep, which is why this works for people who couldn't be bothered.
Borderlands 1 is pretty much unforgiving when you go against higher level enemies, remember that.
