Are hostile environments even hostile?

Hi,

I landed on the 4-star island and mined just a little bit, avoiding conflict. I don't think I was equipped for it.
I tried stepping on the hot terrain and the character complained, but I saw no negative consequence.
Later, the same happened in the swamp.

Is there anything dangerous about those terrains or is it just the character whining?

Maybe I should add that I have the Switch version of the game. Don't know if there's a difference.

I think you get a DoT if you're hit from an enemy in a biome you don't have a buff for. Not honestly too sure myself.

Do you mean that it makes combat more dangerous, but is not, in itself, harmful?

I believe it just slows you down so you can't run as fast. I've noticed in the swamp areas that I walk/run much slower until I drink an elixir.

When you get hit in the fire biome you get set on fire
