I want this, too. so annoying.
In my view once you arm a monkey it should last for a decent trip, then you should only have to re-arm it before heading out again.
In general I think the durability of weapons is far too low, tools need a bit of improvement and only the crafting tool seems ok for durability. I can understand the initial stone tool sucking as its a stop-gap but I am constantly re-tooling or re-arming my monkeys distracting from actual building or exploration.
Give him order to learn - take a tool out of the chest - give a tool to someone who needs - he will imitate you
I can imagine it now heading out to explore with one monkey carrying a chest, another handing out weapons to the others from that chest, wow cool idea, or not. Pretty poor work around for something that can be fixed with a few tweaks. You also forget that the one with the orders to hand out probably did not follow you from base while his services aren't required and is not handing out weapons on the front line. You could ask him to follow then teach him mid-combat to hand new weapons out.
Increase weapon durability, allow monkeys to fight unarmed if their weapon breaks at a much reduced capacity - still better than sitting there doing nothing while you get killed trying to give them weapons, oh wait the other two that could be armed and fighting are carrying a chest and trying to hand weapons out (if he remembers to) reducing your fighting squad.
Remembering a lesson that its taught and being able to enable and disable that while still able to be told to follow you without losing what they were just taught might help as well.
Some of these tricks work ok in a static base or location but I do not think they were tested well enough when out doing other things like sailing to another island and exploring.
Its early days yet and I am hoping the devs read these forums and figure out better ways to implement the monkeys.
