How does the game work?

So far I'm just building buildings I like and I have not experienced any serious issues. However I also noticed that my students don't get prestigious futures. They become peasants and village mages. A few became necromancers.
Is there an introduction to this game? I saw a tutorial in the options menu, but there was very little of it. Currently I just build rooms, recruit students, sometimes contact a faction, create houses and thats it. Most interesting are the texts that show up and require a decision. The rest of the gameplay is pretty bland so far, despite some interesting room designs.
Can I directly interact with students? I've only seen the possibility of letting them learn something specific via the house system.

I build a school that focuses usually on 2 different magic types, and I do everything I can to better those studies. I usually only get like rank 1 graduates though still, but it's pretty reliable.

I don't think you can directly interact with students, and if you could, I'm not sure what good that would do.
