Mac OS Version Mismatch/Legacy Mode Errors - FIXED
Recently, due to the Civ 5 update for Catalina, it has been rather difficult to play with friends who are playing on Windows. I would typically encounter the "Version Mismatch" issue when trying to connect to their lobby and vice versa. Allegedly this was due to the fact that the game was no longer compatible with the Catalina update on Macs and so the game was updated to 64bit? (Please somebody correct me if this is not true!)

Anyway, I had heard that this Version Mismatch could be overcome by downloading the legacy version of the game on both sides. This is achieved by:
- Right clicking on the game in your steam library and selecting properties
- Heading to the Betas tab and typing "ineedlegacyaccess" into the code box
- Selecting legacy mode as your current beta (Game must not be running in order to select this option)
- Downloading the legacy version of the game (700mb) and booting up in this version of the game.

However, this is when I encountered ISSUE NO.2!
___________________________________________
I am unsure as to whether anybody else has encountered this issue as well, but essentially what would happen is that legacy mode would crash as soon as a game was started from the main menu or online. This was rather odd to me as my friend who is also on Mac OS did not have the same issue and his game ran as normal.

After hours of fiddling, I finally discovered the fix - which I hope will help somebody out there until the game is actually compatible again between Mac OS and Windows!

THE FIX = "God's and King's" causes Legacy Mode to crash. All other DLC's work fine but God's and King's causes the game to crash. Uncheck the box in the DLC menu on the title screen and you should be good to go!

CONCLUSION =
______________
Download and play legacy version to solve the issue. If the game crashes, disable God's and King's DLC.

Hope this helps :)

Let me know if you also encountered these issues!

We on Mac tried that as well and it didn't work. The question is not whether it works for you but whether it works for your friend who is on Mac.

Hi there, sorry if I didn't make it clear enough above. I am a Mac user and found that it worked for me and i was able to play with my windows friend. I have another friend who uses mac and mentioned this as well, probably causing the confusion.

So how come it works for you but not for others? I tried the legacy version, removed G&K, and still got a version mismatch. The game didn't crash for me.

Both you and your windows friend must be running Legacy version :)

I tried that approach as well, but I don't think they removed G&K. I suppose your alternative solves a part of the problem, and allows you to keep Catalina. Hmm

They must also be running exactly the same DLC as you. Try that and get back to me! I am actually not running Catalina, I am still on Mojave myself.

If you're on Mojave, you should look into this thread: https://steamcommunity.com/app/8930/discussions/0/1738886823087863322/

Great thread! But the issue is that you cannot play with other mac players anymore unless they also do this. My needs were admittedly a bit more niche I guess :) I wanted to play with a mac user and a windows user. I found that my approach solved the issue for me. Hopefully this thread helps somebody else!

Hi all,

I was myself writing a thread about this solution when I found this one. Thanks to shibno01 and his message on the pinned thread I read yesterday, I tried it and it worked for me; I confirm what the OP has written above.

- Me (running a Mac, Mojave OS) and my friend (running a Windows) both downloaded AND activated the legacy mode (I am not certain whether or not it is necessary for Win users to do so as only the Mac version was updated though)

- I, as the host of the online multiplayer game, disabled the Gods and Kings extension.

It worked fine.

Problems :

- Disabling the G&K extension won't disable any game's mechanics due to the BNW extension using it, but only disable civs : I believe they are the following : The Netherlands, the Celts, the Maya, Carthage, Byzantium, the Huns, Austria, Ethiopia, and Sweden

- I encountered crashes launching solo games

In hope we can find a better solution... Don't hesitate to share your personal experiences and please write to Aspyr in order to fix this..

Just adding this: my son hosts a game on a current version of the windows client, and I join using the legacy version from my Mac (on Mojave). It works, it crashes more often than we’d like, but we can play. We both had to disable Gods and Kings, and single player crashes for me.
