I strongly recommend you subscribe to the mod, allow it to download and test in game, then go to documents > my games > Sid Meier's Civilization 5 > MODS, right-click and copy your subscribed mods and place the copies in a safe folder outside of the game structure. Then go back to the workshop, favorite and unsubscribe.
By doing this, you have a backup copy of the mods if they are deleted or changed in such a way as to negatively affect your experience, or if you need to do a fresh install and inadvertently delete the mods along with the game. This has saved me a couple of times already, and multiple times in other games. When a steam mod is updated or pulled, it affects you whether you wanted it to or not, if you are subscribed.
