Should I get the regular edition or GOTY?
After trying the demo I really want to get this game, although the price for GOTY is steep, it'll save me a lot of money in DLC. If I want to play the game right now, which should I get?

Any version of the game is awesome, the DLC goes on sale very often.

I guess my question is, should I wait for a sale or should I get the game now?

I would buy the regular edition. The GOTY edition does not include Gods and Kings, which is the only meaningful dlc. The others dont really add much to the game. If there is something specific that looks interesting you might want that dlc, but just ignore all the extra small stuff. For 20 more dollars, the GOTY edition isnt worth it.

Flamable Steve is right. I'm very disappointed with the lack of dlc content and whatever else that they have put out there, but GaK is a must buy (even if it should have already been a part of vanilla).

I disagree that the DLC is not worth having, I enjoy it very much. But it's not essential. If you don't want to buy the game of the year right now, there's no reason not to get the base game. You can pick up the DLC later on sale (it often goes for 75% off).

Basically, the basic game is very enjoyable (if you liked the demo, you have an idea already). Most of the DLC just gives you more ways to enjoy the game (new civilizations, more wonders, extra map types, and scenarios). The Cradle of Civilizations DLCs are a waste of money, but everything else is useful.

So unless you want the whole thing now, just buy the basic game. Buy the DLC when it goes on sale, or when you want the game freshened.

One thing: I would like to have the soundtrack. That legitimately comes only with the GOTY as far as I am aware.

Good point. If you want the soundtrack, you need Game of the year.

I agree with the others. The DLC is not all that. Half is scenarions, meaning they dont add anything to a regular playthrough. The other half are more civilizations, but since youre new to the game, and it allready comes with some 20 civilizations, it will be a long time before youll want any of those for extra variety. And like the others say: They frequently go on salve. As in 75% off.

I actually have the normal Civilization 5 to gift, if you have something to trade. If not, wether you choose normal or GOTY edition, wait for the christmas sale. All of it will no doubt be at least 50% off. More likely 75%.

Message me, if you wanna trade :-)

Hey ... BEFORE you even buy this game through Steam ... you might want to check out the HUNDREDS of comments about the lame support from Steam, bad patches, lousy graphics, multiple crashes, unplayable scenarios, etc. as posted in these forum topics. You really might want to wait about a year before you even buy the game ... and never DL it from Steam! Good luck if you do!
