Large Islands vs. Small Continents?

Someone know what the different between Large Islands maps and Small Continents maps are?

My personal experience with Small Continents are, that most of the civs often starts on a large continents, with 1-3 civs starting on their own island.

Yah, that's right. In small continents the majority of civs start on one continent while some start on there own. In large island everybody gets their own island except for the rare times where two civs are on one island.

Islands are easiest, mostly because the AI hasn't a remote clue how to use a navy. 1/2 the time it can't even figure how to get off its starting island to expand and will just sit there running units around its territories for 500+ turns.
