Sid Meier's Civilization V

Can't play Civ 5 in Direct X 10/11 in Windows 7 64bit
I have tried everything that has been suggested in other posts, I have made sure that steam is not running in compatibillity mode, I have verified the game cache in steam, etc...

My nVidia drivers are up to date and my system is well above minimum requirements (16GB RAM, AMD FX-4100 Quad Core Processor, nVidia GTX 560 Ti). Yet when I select the option it begins to run and then immediately closes.

I don't see how it could be Windows or DX11 causing this, no other DX11 game I have does this.

I have been in touch with the geek squad at Bestbuy and they say I have to re-install windows because directx is screwed up on windows 7 64 bit.

Here is your problem. I would rather get an opinion from my dog than from anyone at Best Buy Geek Squad. Those clowns have no idea what they're talking about. They usually recommend whatever will make them the most money and sales.:borderlands2:

This has to be a problem with steam. Gone through countless numbers of threads of people with a wide variety of graphics cards, CPUs, RAM, etc. Hopefully it's fixed soon and we can finally play the game that we paid for.
Mine is also having the same problem. I have Windows 7 64-Bits and used to be able to play this game on DirectX 11, now it won't even let me select that option beside DirectX 9
My Civ5 Gold Edition crashed shortly after I start playing. Haven't tried running in DX9 yet, but DX11 crashes.
Alright, I might have found a temporary fix.

Start the game on Steam like normally, but on the option menu, instead of launching the game when it asks you to select either DirectX 10 or 9, right click on the option menu and select "Create shortcut for DirectX 11".

From your Windows Desktop, find the shortcut that you made and launch the game from there. It should hopefully initiate a DX11 setup instead of DX9.
I tried that already to no avail.:|

I ran verification, it found something (downloaded ~9MB) and then I removed .ini files. It works fine so far but I haven't change any of the default video settings.
I just upgraded to Windows 8, that fixed it :p
Fixed! In my case, the offending setting is the one that's about GPU decoding (or something GPU). Enabled it'll crash the game.

Try re installing this - http://www.microsoft.com/en-au/download/details.aspx?id=8109

DX 9 uses its own API, so dont think because you have DX10 or 11 you dont need to update 9 as the DX 9 version that shipped with win7 is outdated compared to the one linked above.

Also sometimes other games etc when un installed or installed can remove or corrupt parts of the DX installation, just give it a shot either way.

And Microsoft released a update for windows and Internet Explorer 10 a while back that caused issues with DX10 and 11 titles in fullscreen - the KB patch was named "Windows 7: KB2670838, platform update" if you have this update either un install this particular update or goto windows updates and find the patch that removes and fixes it.

How to FIX manually if you do ahve the MS update named "KB2670838":

Open Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall Programs > View Installed Updates > Find
and uninstall KB2670838 > Restart computer > Open Windows Update > Check for Updates > Under optional downloads find KB2670838 right click and HIDE it.

To fix it another way as i said goto the Windows update site and there has since been a patch that fixes the KB2670838 patch.

I used this for my problem in ARMA III and it worked, THANK YOU!
Same exact issue. Have tried EVERYTHING listed here. Short of buying a new computer, nothing seems to work. Feeling really ripped off here. And no refunds on digital purchases. Oh joy.

Running Win 7 x64

thanks for the information. somehow i got that phantom update. game does not recognize direct x 10 or 11, and crashes constantly when i run the out dated graphics dx9..when ever i get passed the loading screen..press options and it goes to a loading screen without the word loading..it should be taking me directly to the option controls. This update is probably messing big time with my other games, since i've also noted fps issues out of nowhere.
Ohoo, I got it working, FINALLY!

My problem was this: "Fault Module Name: d3d11.dll" So I searched with that and I first found this:

http://forums.2kgames.com/archive/index.php/t-90381.html

which linked me to this (link is at the end):

http://forums.2kgames.com/showthread.php?91581-gt-gt-Bug-Collide-Civ-V-In-DX10-11-Collides-With-ASUS-GamerOSD

Surprise surprise, it was the ASUS GamerOSD that was causing my problems. I didn't uninstall it, I just pressed exit and CIV 5 worked with DX11! ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ how can a game not work with a recording software loaded (I've never actually used it, it just loads when Win7 loads)??

*PHEW* Now I have another problem that came with some of the new leaders. Their animation is just a gray screen (at least Pocatello and Enrico Dandolu, maybe Hiawatha as well if I remember correctly), but I'll get to those tomorrow. :)

Hope this helps!
