Alliance with the AI?
This is probably the only part that still confuses me, How do i go about getting the AI to go from stabbing me in the back to being my buddy? and what can I do to keep my neigbours friendly?
I noticed that the AI behaviour is quite erractic sometimes so any tips would be great.

For one thing, start with never trusting Bismark. That bastard will always betray you no matter what you do.

easy way to avoid Bismark betraying you is play him yourself :B1:

Keep your promises (settling agreements), trade fairly, keep a strong defense. The AI typically runs on its "personality" (Aztecs or Assyria like to go to war, Morocco wants to trade) and opportunity. I've had success in the past as a "peaceful" civ when I can defend my country against invasion, then become friends with the defeated invader immediately afterward. Their friendships aside from you, religion, and shared borders also play in.

you could also trade the ai some resources that he might not want to loose by declaring war on you

Well last two games, never had anyone wage war on me. One was on king difficulty and then the next was on emperor. I just traded a lot, made friendship agreements, few defensive pacts here and there, became allies with the majority of city states. Both times though I only had 2-4 cities. So I would suggest these or maybe I was just lucky. :P
Best way to avoid them betraying you is to trade with them so heavily they can't afford to go to war with you and maintain an army massive enough to deter attack but not big enough to cripple your economy. If you have the most soldiers in the game the AI generally won't risk it.

Certain leaders are predisposed to being aggressive and might attack just because they can, don't let them make friends with anyone if you can help it. Bribe the aggressive guy to declare war on them so they hate him and will help you when you need it. Just don't let the target get beat on too much and start losing cities because you aren't trying to help the aggressive civ become too powerful to deal with.

Certain civilizations have higher chances of backstabbing you than others do. Each civilization has it's own stats for warmongering, most likely victory pursuits, etc. I've been backstabbed by Wu Zetian, Napoleon Bonaparte, some other civs, and most of all, Alexander the Great. Greece has been my worst backstabber of all civs. And some civs, like Morocco and Venice don't care about war much.

Also, as hard as that can be on higher difficulties, since AI spam units, you need to keep your military strong and your defenses strong enough to make even Greece reconsider backstabbing.
