I feel most of the times a lot of the Civ bonsues wear off by the time you no longer need Hoplites or the +1 to science is eroded by the fact that you have +4 and 30% to sciene through your civics and etc
But I've enjoyed all of them. Only a handful to go for all the victories.
So now my favorite is probably The Shoshone, they have the major land bonus from settlers and the pathfinder is really useful at the start. Not to mention the the 15% combat bonus in friendly land.
You want early game?
They have Jaguars (replace warriors) which have DOUBLE movement through forrest and jungle AND get +33% combat strength in forrest+jungle. They have the strength of a warroir and almost the same capabilities of a scout so you never need to worry about whether to produce a warrior or a scout. Scouts do have a higher regenerative ability with the defensive promotions... but jaguars get 25hp back when they kill a unit and are at warrior strength, plus you can't upgrade scouts, it's an all-in-one package deal early game. Jaguars keep this bonus throughout the game even after upgrading them so you're always gonna win. This is such a substantial benefit that you'd choose Montezuma just for this unit
Culture for EVERY UNIT YOU KILL?? ARE YOU ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ KIDDING ME?? If you're not at war you best be killing the ♥♥♥♥ out of so many barbarians you'll make the barbs look civilised. Farm those ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ like you're Old McDonlad you ♥♥♥♥! If you don't want to be at war with anyone, then you shouldn't have bought the game in the first place and should be sacrificed to god that is Montezuma
Okay, so you like science and being at the top of the science tree because having a stealth bomber whilst your mate only has the Great War Bombers is funny as ♥♥♥♥ and he should definitely be used as a blood sacrifice. Well GUESS WHAT, YOU ♥♥♥♥?! FLOATING GARDENS, THAT'S WHAT, YOU ♥♥♥♥!! PLUS 15% FOOD AND +2 FOOD PER LAKE TILE???? For those less fortunate to have a heavily encumbered intellect, that's a ♥♥♥♥-tonne more population in each city, which is a ♥♥♥♥-tonne more science, and more worked tiles, which means you can use all of the things in your land (basically more everything)
Montezuma #1 <3
The other excellent science civ is Siam. As long as half of your city is in jungle and you leave about 1/3 of your jungle tiles unaltered except for trading posts once you have the Wat you can crank out science to rival Babylon, Korea, and the Inca.
If you like to expand, the Celts are the civ for you. Their special building gives +3 happiness and the pictish warrior lets you get mosques and pagodas for your religion before other civs can even found a religion which gives you an extra 4 culture in each city without using any social policies in religion.
2) I like the Maya for their early science and extra great people
As to "best", I usually go for Domination wins playing America, Germany, China, Mongols.
Sometimes Huns and Assyrians.
Science wins, def Korea and Babylon. Also Venice.
Diplo wins, Greece obviously, sometimes Venice.
All the rest I usually go for the Culture win, with Diplo as a fallback if Culture isn't feasible.
Poland is the best overall simply because it keeps adding up.
Inca and Polynesia are really fun with their improvements though.
Zulu and Ottomans both are really fun with military.
Cause guess what ? Incas don't pay ♥♥♥♥ on hills ! Also good when defending.
As for diplomacy, I go with Venice. The cash they reel in is ridiculous. But the disadvantage is that until you find all the cities, if there is a warmonger in the game, there is a good chance they will roll through them.
Best overall is Poland. Second best is probably Korea.
This post may be from 2013, but it is always an instructive discussion. And it is very interesting to see how others play the game. Almost tempts me to "unlock" Brave New World (which, as an historian, I hate).
As for Gods & Kings, my favorite to solo play are the Persians. The +1 movement bonus for Golden Ages makes workers more productive and greatly reduces losses of catapults, trebuchets, cannon, and artillery while speeding up city conquest. WIth Satraps Courts and Chichen Itza (or rather, Temple of Kukulcán), it is possible to spend around 80% of the game in Golden Ages.
