Best Civs in Civ5
What Civ do you think is the best in Civ5 including G&K and all other DLC, i've enjoyed Babylon and Korea for science but also quite like Civs like Ethopia and India for culture and defence not forgeting Russia who is great at everything. Whats your favourite Civ and Why?

I quite often play as America and Russia. Most of the civs seem very vanilla thogh. Given the fact that your actual game play is dictated by lack of governments, no slider control and civics that you get regardless of what civ you are and mostly the same buildings.

I feel most of the times a lot of the Civ bonsues wear off by the time you no longer need Hoplites or the +1 to science is eroded by the fact that you have +4 and 30% to sciene through your civics and etc

I really like the Huns due to their early knowledge of animal husbandry. It's a very simple bonus, but very useful, especially when you want to get resources before anyone else in mp. However, I'm new to the game and I haven't tried every Civ yet. If I'm missing out on a better Civ, someone let me know.

For a full single player game and with all DLC, Korea is the best civ overall and for the science victory. Brazil is best for the culture victory. Portugal for the diplomatic victory. Germany for domination. Each civ has its merits, though, and all are fun and good at certain things.

Polenysia for early exploration is my favorite, they get embarkment on ocean tiles from the start. So if you are playing on a continents map or pretty much anything but pangea you can spread much faster

For BNW I'd say Poland. The extra social policies are priceless. Shoshone are a close second.

But I've enjoyed all of them. Only a handful to go for all the victories.

I use to love France before BNW, but the expansion removed the Foreign Legion which was the main reason I used france.
So now my favorite is probably The Shoshone, they have the major land bonus from settlers and the pathfinder is really useful at the start. Not to mention the the 15% combat bonus in friendly land. :Uranium:

Montezuma (the Aztecs) is the best civ

You want early game?
They have Jaguars (replace warriors) which have DOUBLE movement through forrest and jungle AND get +33% combat strength in forrest+jungle. They have the strength of a warroir and almost the same capabilities of a scout so you never need to worry about whether to produce a warrior or a scout. Scouts do have a higher regenerative ability with the defensive promotions... but jaguars get 25hp back when they kill a unit and are at warrior strength, plus you can't upgrade scouts, it's an all-in-one package deal early game. Jaguars keep this bonus throughout the game even after upgrading them so you're always gonna win. This is such a substantial benefit that you'd choose Montezuma just for this unit

Culture for EVERY UNIT YOU KILL?? ARE YOU ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ KIDDING ME?? If you're not at war you best be killing the ♥♥♥♥ out of so many barbarians you'll make the barbs look civilised. Farm those ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ like you're Old McDonlad you ♥♥♥♥! If you don't want to be at war with anyone, then you shouldn't have bought the game in the first place and should be sacrificed to god that is Montezuma

Okay, so you like science and being at the top of the science tree because having a stealth bomber whilst your mate only has the Great War Bombers is funny as ♥♥♥♥ and he should definitely be used as a blood sacrifice. Well GUESS WHAT, YOU ♥♥♥♥?! FLOATING GARDENS, THAT'S WHAT, YOU ♥♥♥♥!! PLUS 15% FOOD AND +2 FOOD PER LAKE TILE???? For those less fortunate to have a heavily encumbered intellect, that's a ♥♥♥♥-tonne more population in each city, which is a ♥♥♥♥-tonne more science, and more worked tiles, which means you can use all of the things in your land (basically more everything)

Montezuma #1 <3

Poland is the most over powered civ in the game. That said my favorite is the Inca. All of their units (including civilians) treat any hex that has a hills as flat for movement purposes and if you happen to have Mount Kilimanjaro in the game your military units have truly amazing movement. Roads cost no maintenance in hills and 1/2 elsewhere and properly positioned against mountains the terrace farms let you grow your cities to the point that you are a match in science with Babylon and Korea especially if you picked locations that allow you to build observatories in all your cities. If you set up the map at the beginning of the game to be 3 million years old and arid you can steam roll any other civ because you can farm all those sand dunes and other civs can't.

The other excellent science civ is Siam. As long as half of your city is in jungle and you leave about 1/3 of your jungle tiles unaltered except for trading posts once you have the Wat you can crank out science to rival Babylon, Korea, and the Inca.

If you like to expand, the Celts are the civ for you. Their special building gives +3 happiness and the pictish warrior lets you get mosques and pagodas for your religion before other civs can even found a religion which gives you an extra 4 culture in each city without using any social policies in religion.

1) this post is from 2013.

2) I like the Maya for their early science and extra great people

Tbh I like them all. I cycle through the whole list, and then start over again. Whoever I am playing, I try to max their strengths, but sometimes it's fun to play against type and go for a Culture Win with the Zulus or Huns.

As to "best", I usually go for Domination wins playing America, Germany, China, Mongols.
Sometimes Huns and Assyrians.

Science wins, def Korea and Babylon. Also Venice.

Diplo wins, Greece obviously, sometimes Venice.

All the rest I usually go for the Culture win, with Diplo as a fallback if Culture isn't feasible.

Maya is pretty ridiculous in small games. (a bit too broken in MP if you get the great library and rush).

Poland is the best overall simply because it keeps adding up.

Inca and Polynesia are really fun with their improvements though.

Zulu and Ottomans both are really fun with military.

I always choose incas for science, simply because their cities explode with growth and net you massive loads of science. More citizens, more specialists, more science. And it clicks beautifully with their mountain bias to get observatories (even better if it's a mountain for a religion), Machu Pichu and connect your cities with roads for cash.

Cause guess what ? Incas don't pay ♥♥♥♥ on hills ! Also good when defending.

As for diplomacy, I go with Venice. The cash they reel in is ridiculous. But the disadvantage is that until you find all the cities, if there is a warmonger in the game, there is a good chance they will roll through them.

They are pretty much all good, except possibly the Iroquois. (but the AI bonuses work well for them and Hiawatha is usually a formidable opponent.) Try playing India for a domination victory (I'm not talking about the nuclear Gandhi meme), or The Huns for science; they are both really good at that although it's not obvious. The Aztecs are also really good at science as long as you don't settle too many cities and each city can build a floating garden.

Best overall is Poland. Second best is probably Korea.

Why are the Huns good for science?

This post may be from 2013, but it is always an instructive discussion. And it is very interesting to see how others play the game. Almost tempts me to "unlock" Brave New World (which, as an historian, I hate).

As for Gods & Kings, my favorite to solo play are the Persians. The +1 movement bonus for Golden Ages makes workers more productive and greatly reduces losses of catapults, trebuchets, cannon, and artillery while speeding up city conquest. WIth Satraps Courts and Chichen Itza (or rather, Temple of Kukulcán), it is possible to spend around 80% of the game in Golden Ages.
