Worker Improvement Bug?
I'm new to Civ5 I brought the Game of the year addition this year. This is my first game of Civ after the tutorial.
Firstly I don't put workers on automate. At the beginning of the game I have no problem up grading improvements. However after a few hundred turns my workers can't improve tiles.

What happens it shows the workers working for a turn then they stop the tile will show the built structure whether farm or trading post but there is no increase in the yield icons on the map or in the city menu. I keep ordering them to work they spend a turn then stop.

This is hampering the growth of my cities. I am aiming for a tall civ. Some answers would be appreciated, this is making the game frustrating.

Same problem here. Seems indeed to be a bug in its current version. Haven't found a workaround, yet. Anyone?

I have the same problem, there are no enemies in sight.
The problem lies somewhere in the ownership of certain tiles.
If the tile ever belonged to another Civ, your workers will ask you what to do EVERY turn while on such a tile. Even if you instructed them just to pass through such a tile.

This is also the case for any tile that an enemy has pillaged, work will stop every turn

While this can be extremely annoying, it won't actually give you any technical disadvantage, just keep giving them the same orders each turn, your tile improvement wil be finished eventually. (btw, this seems to happen significantly less with thee gods and kings expansion pack, so it might be worthwhile to buy that.

Actually, if the workers would finish eventually then it would indeed be much less of a hassle. However, I experienced that for the supposed last round to finish a job, the work never gets finished. I assign that last round over and over to the workers... This can be a street, a plantation, or any other improvement. It is, however, only on certain areas on the map, but I am not sure about the criteria for it to be happening (e.g., no war at the moment, and no other units are close).

Thank you so much for commenting after posting I had a another look in the forums and it seems many people are having this problem they have just worded it differently than me so I feel a bit foolish for posting the same thing.

After reading the other posts I did indeed just keep persevering and giving the workers commands which worked. Its really annoying even if you only have two workers.

@ Billy 4 Mates: yes that makes sense its hard to tell though. Most of the time it happens on the edges of my empire but not always.

I will at some point be getting gods & kings I'm hoping it will be on sale.

This function also got broken with the last update. It used to be that workers stopped working when a fight was nearby, so they could get to safety. But now some (not all) workers remain "scared" in such areas. Sometimes a worker stays scared even when moved out of that area. New workers moved in can also get scared but are not always.
1 workaround is to give the scared workers protection with at least a scout, then they don't stop working. The protection needs to remain for a great number of turns even when the war is over, then finaly the worker will stop being scared. Another workaround i found, only worked once for me yet, is to give the scared worker another job on another tile for 1 turn. In my game that next tile even was closer to the enemy-country then the tile the worker should be improving on.

I realize that this is somewhat late for the discussion, but I found that declaring war on a city state cleared this bug out. You can always just ask for peace immediately, but if you declare war too often on city states, then you'll end up at permanent war with them, so not a great option, but when you're late into a fairly large map, it can be worth it to not have to order 8 or so workers every single turn plus those with a legitimate need for orders.

Super late, but I had luck with accompanying the worker with a military unit
