Error Joining Multi-player
Have had no problems joining or hosting multi-player games in the past either in pub games or private. Played multi-player games with no issue as recent as 3 days ago, but now ~75% of the games I try to join I get an error message "Error Joining Multiplayer Session". This happens when I host, when I'm trying a pub game or a direct connect with a friend. I haven't changed any settings on my computer - any ideas what caused this or how to fix it?

Same thing with my brother-in-law. We were playing a game yesterday and today he can't connect to any multiplayer game and is getting the same "error joining multiplayer session." Mine seems to be just fine but his isn't working. Any tips would be appreciated.

Same here. Probably just a steam glitch and will be fixed by tomorrow. Isn't the 1st time this happened.

Same thing here, my friend and I have been playing without problems for the past few weeks, but tonight we can't connect to each other. We've been trying for about 15 minutes with no luck, trying different games, with either of us hosting.

Same here; I've played a multiplayer match every night for the last week or so. Just tonight I'm unable to connect regardless of which game I try to join, though I can see them through internet browsing.

Not sure what's causing the problem, but I don't think that it is that the firewall, router, or any of the usual suspects as I've turned them all off or taken them out of the network equation.

Same issue. Been playing with two friends for the last couple weeks right up to last night. Tonight I get "error joing multiplayer session" every time I try to join. Reboot my computer, my router, reinstalled Civ V, nothing seems to work :(

Logged into a VPN (via Romania, wohoo) and I can now connect to games. So by the look of it this is an ISP issue or glitch, probably temporary.

We finally got a game going, and played for about half an hour before my friend got disconnected. Now he can't rejoin because of the silly error again. Sigh, I guess we'll have to wait until tomorrow for someone to fix it. Kind of annoying, considering I'm wearing a pager right now as an oncall support engineer for my company's services. If our customers were having problems, I'd be paged and fix it even in the middle of the night :-/

Got the same flippin' thing to!
I was playing multiplayer with my friend for the last few weeks (Hooray Steam Sales)
Today, we were about to start a new game...and then I had several problems arise. Only me, I tell you!

When two of my three friend are hosting, I get an "Error joining multiplayer session" message.

When the other friend hosts, I was able to join the game...BUT the other two could not see my name in the game! They can only see "Player X" where X is a number.

Restarted the game, Rebooted my computer, even restarted my computer...to no avail...

You should check if there are any other active network connections on your PC.
I've already had the same problem twice with VMWare and Hamachi. Both installed additional network interfaces. If you're playing on a notebook, most likely you have WLAN and wired LAN. Try deactivating every network connection you dont need to play.
Another problem could be lag or small bandwidth on the route between yours and your friend's PC. In that case blame your ISP play solitaire.

Had the same problem all last night. Its not local, its a steam issue. Im sure it'll be resolved soon, to be fair Civ 5 is buggy as hell anyhow, it'd be nice if they worked onthe kinks instea dof DLC's, bunch of jackasses

For those looking for a temporary work around, check out Evolve VPN. Works great with CIV V.

So this is still happening tonight. I refuse to beleive that something is wrong with my connection as other people keep suggesting. Does anyone from Steam actually monitor these forums?

Same here...

Same here.. I can't believe they still haven't fixed this. People should stop buying games from Firaxis until this sh*t gets fixed! It seems like a lot of people are having these issues.

Having multiple network adapters shouldn't matter. It's a bug in the game, nothing else, and it should be fixed, period.
