Embracing an existing religion
Hello guys,
Im new in civ 5, and played for couple of hours till I get a prophet. I tried to establish a religion but since it was found by someone, I couldnt found it once more. Is that anyway to embrace an existing religion? Thanks in advance

You can simply wait for a someone else's religion to spread to your capital.

Thanks for quick answer, yes Its being spreaded atm but my official religion is still pantheon. will it change too?

No, your "official" religion will never change, you just won't found your own religion. That being said, I'm assuming the reason you cannot found a religion is because the max number of religions has been met?

no it is not. I was going to find christianism but it was already found. I could have found others like buddhism etc. but I didnt. well, I got 2 prophets but still idk how to embrace christ

Apart from aesthetics there is no difference in game plays between religions. Just found Islam and accept Allah as the one true god.

OOOOOKAAAYYY.......let's not get into the whole religion debate here, ok? No arguments yet, but i can *feel* it coming on, so let's just nip it in the bud before this thread gets hijacked and things spiral out of control, ok? So yeah, it's all aesthetics, just change the name if it makes you uncomfortable.

What Pandoradog said. The differences between the symbols are purely cosmetic and have postively no effect on the gameplay. Just select traits you find desirable (assuming these have not yet been taken, either) and found something else. When in doubt, found the Church of the Flying Spagetti Monster.

tbh i used to found a religion such as christianity or the jewish one, then kill the other missionaries and great prophets that would come in and change my religions, and cause endless wars till i realized how stupid these actions were. Heres why, as you get faith points and spend them on the religious buildings and have all your buildings in then your done with the exception of buying great ppl. But the cost rises with purchasing great ppl so that its impossible to get enough faith to buy more. Heres what you do. you buy one inquistor or great missionary just to sit for when you want to change a city back. In the meantime you let these other religions change your cities so you have access to the religious buildings they provide which give you culture, happiness and faith. Then wait for the next one of the next religion to hopefully do the same to get as many of these different buildings as possible. I dont consider myself the best player but i do win on emperor lvl and know my way around abit. I hope this helps you out :)

sorry to fully answer your question if you have very friendly relations with the country that has your religion chances are they will probably send a missionary your way.

ai will send missionaries and prophets no matter what.
there is a diplo bump for when a civ accepts YOUR religion, tho. cannot say for sure the other way around, aka when a civ converts your cities to their religion, as this hasnt happen for me.

I dunno either but i do know if you play civ in a manner where you really play diplomacy properly where you become friends with all the civs but refuse friendship with the troublemakers, as in be friend but dont take the last step of openly declaring your friendship to the world, the missionaries seem to come more often..

You can let your city convert over time, if there's enough pressure, or you can attack and capture missionaries and prophets to convert your people.

Yeah your holy city will always come back to your base religion, but you should note that capturing missionaries or prophets means war :)

Siam converted my holy city once. Had an open borders treaty, and they just stroll up to my capital with their great prophet, and convert the WHOLE city to their religion -_- yeah, I was a bit miffed. So next turn I declared war and killed their great prophet >:D had to send an inquisitor to purge my city.

This is usually why I have a spare Great Prophet stationed near my capital in order to reverse any conversions the AI attempts to make. Of course, if I'm playing a domination game, I'll just declare war and hammer them, but I try to avoid wars in cultural or diplo games.
