Worth Getting Gold Edition?
Hey everyone,

I'm a pretty avid gamer and enjoy a lot of strategy games. I used to play a variety of all sorts, but over the past 6 years I was quite hooked on WoW, and for the past 2 years, I have also had Starcraft 2 and Dota 2 mixed in. Needless to say, I haven't explored many other games in about 6 years since those all can fill a nice chunk of time.
Right about now, I'm quite bored with all 3 of those, though. Dota has gotten boring after 1200 hours, Starcraft 2 doesn't feel much different with the expansion, and WoW has gotten too casual and boring. I'm trying to broaden out and try some different games, and Civ 5 really caught my attention. I was looking at the new Sim City, but it seems to be doing quite poorly on reviews.
If I do decide to get Civ 5, should I drop the bit of extra money to get the gold version? Noting that I have never played any Civ games on the past, but I would just hate to have to spend an additional $30 down the road to upgrade to Gold. Any thoughts or opinions on the game and if its worth getting into for a time sink?
Also, random question, how is the multiplayer? Thanks all!

Gold edition adds a lot of good stuff, if you don't get it you'll want to get it later (and have to relearn some parts of the game). The basic version is fine, but Gold is so much better.

If you're really not sure whether the investment is worthwhile, Steam can provide you with Civilization IV and your outlay on that would be cheaper.

If you're intent on going after Civilization V though, definitely get the Gold version. Well worth the added funding for what you get.

Funny you should include multiplayer in your random question. It seems like random chance whether or not a multiplayer game will work or not. Some people get the multi to work with no issues, for others, it's a weary journey to the bottom of the Hell Of Infinite Disconnects And Freeze-Ups. The single player game is robust, though. Gold Edition is good value for the money, provided you like Civ V in the first place.

A new add-on is coming in July. I will pass on the rumour that it will fix the multiplayer issues, although we've had the promise already. If you can wait until then, you will be sure to get the base game on sale in the Summer Sale. If not, the money is well-spent, Civ V is very good. isn't there a demo somewhere? If there is, I'd say give that a go.
