I should note, this is a clean install. After I got the VM up and running, the OS updated and patched, I installed Steam and redownloaded and installed the game. I have absolutly nothing else running or installed that does not come with steam or an OEM windows.

Did you ever solve your VMWare issue?
I have just purchased Civ V and installed it into a Win 7 VM Workstation environment and I also have the same issue. I "suspect" that the issue may be the "VMWare SVGA 3D" graphics driver.

Edit:
I've found a solution.
The VMWare graphics driver for Windows 7 is only DirectX 9 capable. So even though the DirectX 10 or 11 is the recommended version only the DirectX 9 will play.

Thanks for the reply! I didn't find a solution, but then again I didn't pour all my efforts into it. I had a secondary computer that was good enough and threw my video card into it. If I can recall properly, I think I was able to get it working somewhat, but there was a *HUGE* laginess to the game, as if I was running it off of an old Celeron with 512MB of memory, not an I7 with 16GB.

As you can probably, I don't use steam very much, four months went by and I just now found out I had a message from a long forgotten thread :-/

Civ V is heavily CPU restricted game, so using an old slow processor makes game very very slow.

How about streaming? Would it help you guys? I use in-house streaming function from Steam and play the game with my laptop, but I use my desktop gaming PC for streaming. Then game is not limited by laptop's performance. Of course this is not helping if you need to be able to play the game from a virtual environment for some other reason.
