Montezuma I believe gets scared easily because he was the very first person that I got to be scared of me after like 50-250 turns... Wasn't keeping track, but I'd also like to know how you can scare other civs

So is it just in the AI for different civs to be scared of each other? Kinda like how Alexander and Darius dont get along? I dont know but it's interesting..

Some civs are just easier to scare than others, but you can scare almost any civ if you're big and powerful enough.

This even a powerhouse/warmonger/military civ will be scared under the right circumstances. Even if you are not at war, if you recently were, and the person you attacked called for a peace treaty, you can make demands of them.

You can just demand gold or resoucres, and if they are scared (units around their borders etc) they will pay up.

Even if just at peace, and you have enough units around an enemies base, you can make demands. Its pretty much like demanding tribute from city states, only you get to choose more options.

I have had computer players offer cities for peace if I am conquering them, but never through a demand. I wonder if its possible.

They will usually follow it with some kind of slight about their new leader or master or something.

I do not know if there is a way beyond military to scare nations.

I know vastly inferior Civ's can become in AWE of you, as can city states, meaning you surpassed them with science or culture to a point that you are super advanced.

They usually want to trade and will be passive towards you.

Civs can also turn afraid if you have nukes. I got a nuclear missile one time and every Civ turned Afraid.

Actually, that is how a friend of mine plays any civ game ever. He rushes nukes, then pushes to get nuclear weapons banned, so that he is the only one with any nukes.

Yeh I thought it was just if you had a big enough military and nuked a couple of guys youd get them afraid, also how you can get tributes from city states too XD

Montezuma is maybe the easiest one to be scared, I remember that he was the first afraid one in may games, years ago.

But the difficulty level is also an important factor, once I started to play games with Emperor/Immortal/Deity level there is no afraid leaders anymore. I can't even remember when I has seen the Afraid status last time.

Just owning a nuke is enough to make everyone afraid. Just ban nuke after you got couple of it.

City States can be afraid if you have a strong military and you have your units close or inside their territory, especially at war with another civ next to them

I think it has to with which AI "personality" they get ; and your Score in military and culture

Get a singular nuke first, it makes all Civs cower in fear, and occassionally declare war on you.
