Manufactory vs Oil Well
I have a Manufactory on top of newly appeared oil. It says 7 oil 6 hammers. Would I be better off with an Oil Well? Is the 7 oil that I receive now an upgraded amount?

You are better off with the manufactory as it will produce more hammers and still provide you with the iron. If there was a non great person tile improvement there you should remove it but great person improvements provide the resource underneath.

I was shocked to find that out, and I was please to have 7 oil out of it. I was just wondering if I can achieve more oil with a Well. I do have two off shore oil platforms to install once the technology is researched, so I should be ok.

Oil well do not add the amount of resourse on the tile just allow you to use them.
It is kinda neat when you think about it a manufactory might have been running on that oil before you knew it was there.
I found coal under mine once.

I know the oil well adds the resource to your trade pool, but I thought the Oil Well can be upgraded. 90% of my workers are automated, and I take them off automation when I want to do something manually.

If you NEED oil you should think about it but until then keep the manufactory

It wouldn't matter anyway. Great Person tile improvements grant you the resource of the tile it is on.

Keep the manufactory.

Oil wells connect the resource to your trade network and add +3 production to the tile.
Manufactories connect the resource and add a min of +4 production to the tile with many ways to improve that tiles output.

Neither increase the oil output, but the manufactories have many more bonuses that will improve the tile output.

There may be some rare case with just the right policies and religous beliefs that would make an oil well better, but Manufactory is the better improvement.

A manufactory is better than an oil well, but also a lot more expensive. Ideally you would have had a manufactory AND an oil well, but too bad you expended the engineer already.

An offshore platform with god of the sea provides upto 6 production. That's a lot less than 10 or 11 you get with a manufactory and freedom.

I did not know that oil was going to appear under that tile. I try to choose tiles based on my need at the time. I have noticed that oil does appear on barren tiles, but you still do not know which ones. I am still under the belief that you have to manage your civ based on space and your current position, and worry about the future when it comes.

UNLESS I AM MISSING SOMETHING. Do you know which tiles will be an oil tile? I have settled cities on good guesses that came true.

A great improvement or an improvement at all does not destroy strategic resources. The resource may be unavailable (like in case of a farm) or the graphics may glitch (like with a manurefactory).

You sometimes can guess hidden resources by the suggestions when you got your great person selected. These suggestions do not show on tiles with hidden resources. You can also tell hidden resources when a city puts effort into acquiring a far away and apparently empty tile.

No worries, that is the reason GP improvements connect the resources. There was a time when they didn't and it really sucked to find out you put a acadamy on top of the only oil or coal in your territory. So they fixed it.

I consider it a bug that your advisors seem to have knowledge about these hidden resources. They must be plotting against me if they are keeping information from me. Like when the advisors recommend building a fishing boat when there are no unimproved sea resources left in the city reach. That means there is oil hidden out there somewhere.
