Black hexagons instead of clouds

When I play Civ 5 (using DirectX9) instead of clouds there are black hexagons. In Civ 5 vids everyone seems to have clouds but I have black hexagons, do I have to change something in vidoe settings to make the unknow areas look like clouds?

Those people are running DX10

Your system and/or GPU specs are the problem. As said before, use DX10 and don't use the minimum settings.

When I had civs 5 gold on my wifes pc, it would only do the black hexagons no matter what setting I tried. I acquired civs 5 complete and put the game back on my old laptop, I had the clouds back. She has windows 8, I wonder if that messed it up, cuz we have a lot of problems with windows 8.

You can have clouds in DX9. I turn clouds off on my laptop though.

Does it really matter, though, if it's clouds or hexagons? Either way, you know that you don't know what's over there.

The game runs a bit slower with clouds enabled, you can feel the difference on slower machines.
