Can't get Civ V to launch anymore
Hi all, i ve played hundreds of hours of Civ V over the years, until yesterday..
Lasy night i got some major windows update it seems, and now even tho the 2K launcher appear, after pressing the Play button, nothing happens and seems like the game is not initiated and the play button on Steam launcher turns back to Play in green > not launched.
All other Steam games works fine.

Any pointers or ideas?

Thanks

Maybe you can check the discussion here:

It seems to work in two cases, at the least, that I know of.
Please read the entire thread.
Also, it you are using Nvidia graphics card, just update that as well, a couple of updates were released in March 2023 including for the really old cards.

I ll have a look but like i said, the game was running fine until yesterday, then last evening i got some major (multi restarts) win 10 update, and today it just won t launch.
Only change between yesterday afternoon and today is that win10 update..afaik

I ve tried clearing all cache and stuff, launching it with directX9 instead of 10/11..nothing works..

Did you try everything mentioned in that thread and restart your system before trying again?
The next best thing I can suggest is check for your driver updates.
Ignore the heading of that thread. It worked for post Win10 updates as well, you can check the threads of that period.

As the last resort. Back up your saves.
Uninstall your entire game.
Clear all cache from your downloads: disk as well as steam.
Clear all temp files from your system and prefetch as well.
Check for any other update from Windows. If available, install that.
Re-start your system.
Re-download CivV and try to launch it.
I am assuming you already verified your files atleast once now

Just a thought: Try it launching without the launcher, in case you haven't started uninstalling.

Tried as well, but even if you directly run the CivilizationV_DX11.exe, it sill opens the launcher in the background, and anyway the result is the same...

This is quite annoying to have something working, and for no obvious reason not working anymore the next day

Here they are saying verify files before bypassing the launcher. Try it, since you have been patiently trying so much.
I have been playing it only on DX9 though.

Cheers! :steamhappy:
Play it on DX9, it is stable on it and keep updating your drivers as long as you have support.

Here is an option that work for me whenever I get bogged down from my 300+ Mods.
I am copying it from the original advice. I have done this many times over the years, but you you will need to save your manual mod downloads into a separate folder.

Ghadaro 4 hours ago

I'm going to assume you are on windows as it isn't stated.

Go to documents/my games/sid meir's civilization 5/mods

Go into the cache folder and delete everything
Go into the moduserdata folder and delete everything.

In Steam go to Steam->Settings->Downloads
Click on clear download cache.

Now try again.

If the above failed try changing the download region in Steam->settings->downloads.
