What is the maximum amount of promotions?
Is there a limit to how many promotions a unit can get? Or can you get them all?

Say what? It is quite possible to get all of the promotions.

But its more theoretical, maybe if you disable every Kind of victory and make lots of wäre where you only kill enemy units of something like that... Plesse correct me if im wrong.

It's possible to get them all, at least from reports on the Civ Fanatics forums. But you basically have to have that unit survive the entire game.

Related, I think the level cap is 15:

I believe that is more than enough experience to get all promotions.

I wonder what the limit is for some of those weird units like the kriss swordsman when you add all of their weird promotions, upgrade them and then go for standard promotions.

You can get every promotion that unit could normally get through levels plus every promotion you can get from unique abilities if appropriate.

Its not hard but the unit has to live through the entire game OR you can try to lvl one, ie place him near an enemy city and let him get plunked on retreat to heal. Rinse & repeat. I often do this with a city state just to get three range catapults n such.

I just love well promoted double shooting, one extra range, artillary. I just totally love it. When I accidently let one get killed by stealth bombers I actually tear up (a little bit).

It's not theoretical - I've done it. (WIsh I still had all of the screenshots from my old computer.)

Once you get all of the promotions your xp will keep stacking. If you take any damage you'll be forced to pick the insta-heal promotion.

Found a post of mine at CFC with a screenshot:

I also got a kick out of this one (near the bottom):

Great name for the unit too.

Raging Barbarians with the No XP limit from Barbarians mod and this is easy to do.
Baneken Jan 16, 2014 @ 2:04am
Well in BNW you get 0 Xp from barbarians after lvl 3 so you have to work for you promotions after that.
For the record: having two machine guns with both logistics and range promotions is great and even better once they upgrade to bazookas.:Gems:

Ive gotten units maxed out plenty of times. But I only play epic and marathon legnth games on large to huge maps so there is plenty of oppertunity. Once you run out of promotions to give units they just get the insta-health when they get enough experience. Ive mostly done it with ships, becuase once you get the range bonus you can just sit back out of range of the cities defenses and blast away at them for ever.

Its been that way since the beginning of Civ V. That's why I mentioned the mod.

So I went and did a little research. (Yes, this took a while.) Just how far can you promote a unit? It depends on what the unit starts as. Let's say you have a scout:

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=217201841

Then you upggrade him to an archer (composite bow as Shoshone):

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=217201887

But what about a chariot archer:

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=219034722

Upgrade that chariot to a knight:

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=217854914

Then to a landship:

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=218933276

You can still get further levels from using the insta-heal promotion, but I was only doing promotions that actually give you some type of a bonus.

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=219034899

Using insta-heal promotions to level, Zulu units should be able to hit somewhere in the 30s. Possibly even to 40.

Edit:

All of this is in BNW. I'm not sure how far you could get in vanilla doing a Scout > Archer >Rifle > Mechanized Infantry route.

Maybe I'll go find out.
