Trading Great Works?
It makes no sense to me. What's the point of making a whole interface for trading things that are completely the same? Why would you trade one great painting for another that does nothing different?

Because certain buildings allow multiple great works and to get an additional bonus it requires certain combos of time period and civilization.

For Example, say the great library needs two writings from two different cultures and twodifferent time periods for an additional +2 culture. If you only have your GWs, you trade one of your 'duplicates' for something different to get the bonus.

Sometimes I need a great work from the same era or a different civilization for Museum bonuses, and I don't want to waste 100 turns taking over random cities.

To be specific, certain Wonders, as well as Museums, give extra Culture and Tourism when paired up in certain patterns. For example, the Louvre gives you +4 Tourism and Culture if you manage to place two Artifacts and two Great Works of Art, all from different eras and Civilizations, in it. In order to fill this requirement, you ihave to trade some of your Civilization's Great Works of Art in order to get at least one Great Work of Art from a different Civilization and era.

Oh, I see. Never saw anything show up yet though. It's only my first playthrough with BNW and I'm only in the 1500's.

In order to get Great Works early in the game, you need invest in the construction of specific Great Wonders and cultural buildings that increase the number of points needed to develop Great Writers or Artists. When a Great Writer or Artist appears, you can expend it to create a Great Work--as long as you have an open slot in a cultural building (such as a theatre). By trading Great Works with other civilizations, you can make combinations that satisfy the requirements for bonus tourist points in your museums. With high tourism and cultural points, you can win a Cultural Victory.

That's exactly what I'm doing. I got the great library and already filled it by the AD's, but in the meantime I also got the Parthenon (comes with a work). I only got great writings until I got to the Artists' Guild and was able to put it in my palace.

I pissed off the world trying to turn this city-state nobody cared about into my trading outpost... There goes my money.
