In the early game you can build a granary, lighthouse or a water mill in your city.

Sheep, fish, and banana tiles can be improved to increase food.

Your choices when founding a religion can increase food output.

Same thing with social policies, particularly the Tradition Tree,

Some Wonders provide food such as the Hanging Gardens and Temple of Artemis.

The Civil Service and Fertilizer techs will give you food.

Granaries (Pottery tech) and Water Mills (The Wheel tech) provide food in building form. Also, the Tradition Social Policy tree boosts growth in capital and unlocks the wonder Hanging Gardens (Mathematics tech) which provides a lot of food in the city. There's not much else earlier in the game, but later on, there are hospitals (biology tech) and medical buildings (penicillin tech). Also, if you can make or get a settler ( you get one free down the Liberty social policy tree) then you could start a city where there is lots of food, make a trade unit there (caravan or cargo ship), and transport food to your first city (you need a granary in the second city for this). Hope this helps! Merry Christmas!

It is good to note that Farms along rivers will gain an additional +1 food long before farms NOT near fresh water. Show preference for settling along rivers and builds farms on tiles along them when practical.
scout for food before you even settle

It is generally not a great idea to wander around for any significant amount of time before settling as every turn wasted puts you a little further behind. Unless there's NO food on the surrounding tiles (ie surrounded by hills) then its best to just settle and try to snipe another good location full of food for second city. You can always just ship food to your capital if you need to.

Maybe take a couple turns to look, and if the RNG is unkind just quit out and start over. Always move the warrior first, of course, just in case you're slightly off the sweet spot.
