Civ Population To Real Life Population
I was wondering if anybody had a suggestion or might even know some developer said ratio for civ population like 1,2,7,15 etc to real life like 100,000, 300,000 or 1,000,000

I'm too lazy to go looking for it, but someone at Civfanatics had checked the demographics at each population level.

Edit:
Broke down and looked for it.
Each number is a level of pop, starting with pop1.

Okay thanks i always have huge cities with giant populations so this is what i always wonder

Are those the updated numbers? One of the patches messed with the numbers a bit, giving more population to larger cities. 30 mil for a size 40 city seems lower than what I remember seeing, but it has been a while since I've looked at the numbers. I had actually thought about playing a game later today, so maybe I will double check.

The thread I took them from was a while back, so things may have changed since then. I'm bored, so I'll fire up a game and check them.

Editing this as I play.

on the demographics I noticed it looks like it shows the city with the most population, not the population as a whole for the civ

A size 44 city has a bigger population than Canada... lol.
Matthew Jan 16, 2014 @ 3:36am
The reason why I thought the numbers didn't look right was because the numbers in my mind were remembering some totals I did as an entire empire, not on a per-city basis. But, all that work you did, bu_chen, wasn't wasted because I was looking for these numbers just a little while ago and remembered you had posted them just recently.

So thanks--at a much later date in time--for posting those numbers.

Hah, it's funny when you compare real life population to civ v population.
What if population was counted in Civ V style?

Town where I was born - population only 1, but close to 2
City where I live now - population almost 6
Largest City in my native country, Helsinki - population 10 (or 13 if metropolitan area is counted)
My native country Finland - total population 21 if counted as a one city in Civ V

It does follow rough averages pretty well. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historical_urban_community_sizes

Discounting extreme outliers, like a few eastern Asia cities and such, of course.

A lot of countries fall into the 40-80 million range (again, ignoring outliers like India/China), which is about 4-8 size ~27 cities, which is about what you end up with in many games.

What isn't necessarily represented well in Civ is all those farm and mine tiles in between your cities supposedly have several smaller towns which add up the rest of your population. For example, Munich in real life only has ~1.4 mill people, but in game Munich represents the city plus say ~115km radius around that to represent that blob of Germany. Same with Stuttgart, Berlin, Cologne, etc.

After all, you aren't expected to spam 200+ size 3 cities :)
