That said, I always prefer to play single player than play with random people. I never join random games. However, nothing measures up to the fun and excitement of a multiplayer game with friends.
It is common knowledge majority of ppl play single player in civ series, always has been this way, if you need "proof" for everything you read then go find it yourself.
I started an informal survey thread here about 2 months ago asking people what they mainly play, single or multi, and the winner of that informal survey was single player.
the crux is that even on quick this game (unless hotseat or with friends) takes entirely to much time for many online players. there is a good amount of drop play, when participating with pugs. but dont let that discourage you. there are communities of players that will go the distance of a full online game and can be some good fun.
i would suggest joining a community or encouraging some friends to play with you.
