Certain video settings won't save
Shadow Quality, Terrain Tesselation Level, and Terrain Shadow Quality keep resetting themselves back down to low.

I just reinstalled this game tonight after having it uninstalled for months. First off I'll let it be known that I have a powerful computer more than capable of maxing out this game's graphics settings. Yet I can only select to launch it in DX9 instead of DX10 & DX11 even though my system is definitely DX11-capable.

I went into video options and turned every setting I could up as high as I could, at which point it told me I needed to restart the game in order for video settings to take effect. So I did so. But upon booting the game up again, those 3 settings had once again set themselves to low. This has been repeating every time I try to change them.

I have all DLC for the game except for Brave New World, though I doubt that would affect it at all.

Anybody know how to get these settings to stay? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your time!

I had the same problem, but the fix is easy.

You can only choose DX 9 as the game defaults to be compatible with XP Service Pack 3, which only supprots DX9.

Go into C:Program Files(x86)/Steam/SteamApps/common/Sid Meier's Civilization 5. There you should see a launcher. Right-click and scroll down to Properties. Go to the Compatibility tab and there you will check a box beside the launching pack. You can now select the compatible Windows version. Use either Vista Service Pack 2 or Windows 7. Close everything, and when you open the Civ 5 launcher again, DX 10 and 11 will be available. Enjoy.

omg this worked. thank you thank you thank you sooo much. i have spent hours if not even days trying to figure this out and this is the only solution that actually worked. i have windows 10 and set it to windows 7 compatibility and it worked for me. at first i only set the dx11 to run as admin but it kept sending me through a loop and not being able to play and i even tried messing with the files but this actually worked. i cant tell you how relieved i am.

I can't see a Compatibility option on the Properties menu.
