Rant about Shaka(Impi)
I wanted to have some constructive discussion on the subject: how the hell did this pass the QA?
Impi is OP all the way from Medieval to Industrial era, it has ranged attack, bonus flanking, bonus movement, upgrades directly to rifleman AND gets obsolete with Rifling rather than Metalurgy.
This means that Shaka can pump out Impis in late renessaince/early industrial roughly every three turns on marathon due to its low 90 hammer production cost...

I realize I am not discovering anything new here but how did something SO OP made it to full release and was never nerfed to be put in line with other nations?

Many units are OP but during one era, not three...

Does anyone know if any offical info was ever released as to how it came to be?

how to deal with zulu, don't spawn near them. Now of course you can't decide that but that's the best way to not get ♥♥♥♥♥♥ over by him. After mid game he ges ♥♥♥♥ on civ wise and ai wise.

Of course they are OP. But if you win the war with he Zulus, which isn't that difficult when playing defensively(Which you should if you are near them), they're screwed since they really spent all their resourcesw on building Impis and not having any other advantages.

well that can be said with any warmonger going at you when you're doing good. Then they lost their military and have no defense. OH AND IT FEELS SOOOO GOOD TO TAKE THEIR ♥♥♥♥ WHEN THEY WHEN AFTER YOU.

Really early warmongers like attila are allmost impossible to defend against, especially on deity.

I once had a game on deity where Atilla's scout found me before I even had my scout and his settler settled within 5 tiles of my capital shortly after. One of the few times I've just said f it and rerolled.

Ah, old Shaka. I remember he spent his all three or four great generals to build fords in row to reach my city. One of the legitimately crazy leaders in CIv. I prefer Gandhi over him.

Guess what happened in my first deity game!

TL;DR: First Deity game; spawned right next to attila, didn't even play defensively!

In my previous game, I was playing as Hiawatha/Iroquois. Shaka/Zulus spawned directly to the north of me, and I had a suspicion that would mean trouble. To my surprise, they never attacked me - I'm guessing I had a sufficiently large military to act as a deterrent (acquired largely through heathen conversion). As it turned out, later in the game (some time after turn 400 or so) I went on the offensive. (I don't play for domination, but I have a policy about spying: first time I catch you, I forgive you; the second time, I demand you stop spying; the third time, I denouce you; after that, I consider that war is justified. Unfortunately for him, Shaka was caught a fourth time, and his response was so... smug. 'You can't do anything about it...,' or words to that effect.) I was attacking his cities with bombers while he was defending with riflemen and some medieval-era units. By the time he sued for peace, I had taken all but two of his cities (I did capture his capital in the process), which were separated from each other by a continent. That was the most cities I ever had at the end of a game - 29, i think it was. My happiness rating hovered near 100 the whole time (I had been playing for a culture victory). Moral of the story: a good defense can go a long way toward preventing aggression... but if you need to go on the offensive, there's nothing like owning a fleet of bombers....
