Why connecting cities by harbors doesn't give me gold?
I thought city connection gives me gold, but after I built harbor in the cities on other continents, my income does not increase. Any help?

You need a harbor in your capital or a city connected to your capital as well.

you need a clear line of sight across the water between the harbored cities

This ^ - Once you build your harbor, you should see that little 'yellow/black circle thingy' icon that indicates the city is now connected to your capital and part of the network

If you don't see it - something is wrong - either your capital doesnt have a harbor / isnt linked to a city that has one, enemy ships have blockaded that city etc etc

Is this true? I've set up harbors in my capital and other cities before to no avail, but this could possibly explain it.

You need a navigable path to connect them. Ice blocks the path, as do deep ocean tiles before you research Navigation.

To clarify that statement, you need an unbroken chain of visible tiles(no fog) between the two harbors to form a connection. This is rare because most of the time for you to get a city somewhere this requirement would already by fulfilled but it can come up probably because of the way the map wraps around or possibly just city placement in relation to fog.
I've personally never experienced it but it seems like others have confirmed this.

Also worth noting that you have to have researched The Wheel, since it's a requirement for establishing city connections. Not likely to have harbors going before The Wheel, but not uncommon when playing as Carthage.
