Civ 5 tips please!
I'm relatively new to the game, and I would like some tips. I'd like to go for a science victory, but any tips in general would be awesome!

Start your civ in the information era (using advanced settings), research as much as you can, build parts, done.

Hope that kinda' helped.

Well, it's a good start (no pun intended), but what about from the start of civilization?
Start of the game build a scout, monument, worker in that order. Once your first city hits 4 population build a settler. Shoot for at least 3 cities though 4-5 is better. Buy an archer early if you have barbarian problems.
For your first social policy go tradition and complete that tree, once rationalism unlocks grab some policies in that too and complete it if you're going for science.
For research just look for techs that boost science and shoot for those, you'll figure out after a few games what techs to neglect and which ones to push for.

It is the type of game that getting experiance playing is the best way to figure out what works for you. Having said that, there are guides onlines for most, of not all, of the civilazations. The strategy for each civ is a little diffferent but you can win with any civ playing your play style taking advantage of the civ's unigue ablities.

I usually open the honor tree first. I like to be pro active for the gold and experience instead of reacting to some barbarian wrecking my mine or breaking my trade route.

Then I complate the tradition tree in its entirity. No World wonder is worth stressing about. Do not let your military or infrastrucrure get too weak because of your desire to get the wonders. Make trade routes when you can. But you need a ship or two to help protect the sea routes.

Good luck.

Study the tech trees and the SPolicy trees to see what any one item does for you . Do a few short (100-150 turn) games to get your feet wet, and get the 'feel' of how things come together; i.e., mining unlocks making mines and chopping forests; and so on . Once you've done the tutorials, go next to Chieftan level to get your methods down, on small maps, to start beating up on AI's . Then work up to Warlord, Prince, as you gain confidence in what you're doing . Have fun, and good luck !!
Also there guides in Workshop worth reading for tips and strategies, and for named CIV's.

Yeah I love that early stage of the game hunting down barbarians giving your units valuable experience. Montezuma is good for this as he gets culture for each kill and his Jaguar unit can move two spaces through jungle or forest. I find a Jaguar and a scout sufficient for this. The barbarian units don't recover fast so even if your unit is too weak to take a barbarian fort you can attack then let the unit fully heal ten attack again. I complete both honour and tradition branches but best to focus on completing tradition first otherwise your culture growth will be just too slow. If you are playing at the higher levels you need to get Stone Henge to ensure a religion and Neuschatwain is very useful later on because it will boost Happiness Gold and culture from each Castle. At advanced levels getting ahead early on science is difficult and if you do get ahead other civ spies will steal technology. But you can catch up on science later on. I think te science victory is probably the easiest one to get,

starting in the information era is a bad suggestion because it just makes the AI do all your science build for you. first the AI almost always does things wrong...second you dont really learn anything that way....you just avoid playing part of the game. my advice is:

1. obviously you need to fill out the rationalism part of the culture tree. also there is a skill you can take in the patronage tree about 3 builds in that increases your research considerably. take that too.

2. if you see any jungle squares do not chop them down..leave them for later. after you research education and build a university those tiles will produce 2 food and 2 research and you can build a trading post on there to add 2 gold ...so undeveloped jungle squares are quite uesfull for buffing up tech

3. build a science city. build the national science acadamy and oxford university in the same city. be sure to build these....you need libraries in all your cities to build the first and universities in all cities to build the second so do not build cities too fast.

4. choose civs that have a science advantage. assyria or china perhaps?

5. grow your cities fast and load up on happiness buffs. remember that your capital will be cranking out 30-50% of all your science so make sure it is big and happy. plant new cities around resources whenever possible.

6. look at the blue number in the upper left hand corner of the screen...that is your science output...you should be cranking out somewhere around 1000 to win at king and emporor level...also click on the "additional information" icon in the upper left corner and then click on the "demographics" choice in the menu. that tells you how you are doing relative to other civs in a number of areas...including tech level. get to #1 as fast as possible and stay there.

Sync up your game plans with policies
Tradition-Tall Empire (High Populated Cities but few number of cities like 3 or 4)
Liberty- Wide Empire (Weak cities but a lot of cities)
Honor- Defensive: Helps with barbs and future wars
Piety- Good for faith generation
Patronage- Good for diplomatic victory to get citystates. *Diplomatic Victory Must*
Aesthetics-Good for culture and future tourism generation *Culture Victory Must*
Commerce- Good for wealth generation
Exploration- Good for well, exploration. Also navies

This is where it gets fun
Freedom- Great for Tall empires which focuses on great people, golden ages and culture/tourism
Order- Great for Science, Production and Tall empires
Autocracy- Great for Tourism, and domination.

Keep a strong military, not too strong, just equal to what other civs have. Many times have I been attempting a Culture Victory and been conquered by another (Usually militaristic) civ.

If you have no money, build Markets, Banks, and Stock Exchanges. If that fails, build Caravans and Cargo Ships and set up trade routes.

Always try to build Wonders that help you on your way to what ever victory you are attempting.

My recommendation for victory is Science. It's very easy if you know what you are doing.

Found a city near a spot with plenty of hills, but make sure it has a substantial food supply and plenty of lux. resources. Hills (with Mines) will make it easy for building early game Wonders. If you want to build late game wonders I suggest acquiring Great Engineers and making a Manufactory on Hills.

The more Great People you have, the better!

Brave New World Expansion Pack only

If you want to found a religion, do so in your largest city. Once I was playing as Japan (Classical Era) and my capital (Kyoto) was pop. 5. My 2nd city (Osaka) was pop 15. (Plenty of Flood Plains with Wheat) My holy city was Osaka.

If you are attempting a Culture Victory, make sure to have plenty of Tourism. (50 or more is recommended)

Hope this helps!

A solid choice for science victory in BNW is to go with Korea, I usually take the Tradition > commerce > rationalism and close it with freedom ideology. The point is to make a small solid tall empire that runs science with great person improvements and specialists, you have to keep the gold balance through safe trade routes and Korean coastal predisposition was helped with its insanely hard-shelled turtle ships and ancient katyusha- er hwacha.

To rise your cities tall you need lots of happiness and lots of food, the commerce policy path could helps you with the happiness provided you can get some extra luxuries, usually I aim at maritime city states that also has luxury, two bird with one stone. With Freedom ideology you can keep the influence level high by keeping the trade routes alive while your spies destroys any competitions in the elections.

The problem with Koreans is you may fell into false sense of security during the medieval to mid-game and got left behind when all the others upgrading their ground assault units in the industrial stage. As a small empire you have to take into consideration about the numbers of defensive unit you had since you have a limited production queue to replace them or to quickly raise your defensive strature.

How many cities did you make?

Usually around 3 or 4 to keep the happiness high.
