Can you gift Great People?
Like, are you able to gift your teammate a Great Engineer?

If you're going to do lots of that then play as Sweden, they get a City State bonus for doing so.

Think a while how great this is... Culture victory in teamplay is quite strange, because one player must get influential status also to their teammates (not tested, but read somewhere that it is so). So, one player in your team targets culture victory while other player (military/science?) still produces GWAMs (Great Writers, Artists and Musicians) and gifts them all to culture player. Very powerful against AI teams, because they don't use that method and your team's culture player have then double amount of GWAMs against what AI would have. I have tested this couple of times with my friend, but never actually went to the end. You can gift Great Persons also in non-team games, you just need open borders and gift unit in same way like you gift units to a CS.

In any case, you need to move your units to your teammate's lands, but this can be done even if you are on different continents. Player A (military/science) can build a new city next to his/hers other cities and gift the new city to player B (culture), who's capital is on other continent. Then player A can move his/hers GWAMs to new city's lands and gift them to player B. Player B can then make Great Works from those gifted GWAMS and move those Great Works to cities in his/hers own continent. Teleporting Great works are very practical. Player B can also make a new city and gift it to player A, if there is a need for two way GP trading or if player B needs/wants an outpost in other continent.

Could this also work with Great Merchants of Venice, with Venice giving them to teammates?

Umm.. Very strange idea indeed. I don't know, but most likely it would work, because... Only other UU Great Person is Mongolia's Khan, and you can get Khans from City States (using Educated Eilte policy), which proves that UU GPs can be used by other civs than their original civ.

But I can't imagine a case where this could be beneficial to the team, because it handicaps Venice player more than it benefits the other player in the team. In the other hand, Spain and Venice makes a nice team, because then Spain can gift Conqistadors to Venice. I don't know if even normal settlers can be gifted to Venice, maybe...

Teamplay is mostly broken and human team can abuse game mechanisms and AI teams so badly that it's not even fun anymore, while AI+human mixed teams are unplayable. I have started at least dozen co-op games (two human team against AI teams) but never finished a single one. AI teams are just not worthy opponents. Civ V is a great single player game, ok MP game, but quite poor co-op game.

I honestly never considered doing this. I guess I CAN be nice to friends ingame. Who knew?

Actually, say venice is now no longer needing to expand. RIght? So they might want to gift it to a team player instead of using it themselves.
Think about it

I imagine so, getting the policy for city-states to gift great people can get you a Merchant of Venice.

My friend and I tried it a couple of days ago. It is possible, though Venice can't use settlers (but can have it gifted). However, Merchant of Venice can be used by other players. Could be useful when playing with Venice as teammate, but it doesnt really benefit the team or changes the game.
