With Arabia I was a gold an cultural mongerer, I could buy influence and trade goods with ease and despite upsetting neighbors (building wonders and taking a few natural wonders). It was a brilliant change of pace instead of going full on War :p.
China seems to strike a decent balance of those two atm. I have in my current co-op game a decently strong military force and enough cultural+ and decent happiness+ that i'll be hitting my second Golden Age already (only 100 turns in the game atm).
I say go all ham with your next pick and go with Zulu, Sonhai, Polynesian or Shoshone ( most likely my next pick for me personally).
If you want to go for domination, Rome, Germany, and Zulu are nice. Rome gets some BA units in the Classical era, on the military end of the tech tree, no less, the Zulu are nearly unstoppable until riflemen, and even then, those early Medieval impis can put up one heck of a fight, and Germany can zerg rush better that almost anyone thanks to their ability to 'enlist' barbarian units.
If you don't want to curb-stomp your neighbors, the Inca are surprisingly good. That hill/mountain bias makes them a top contender for a Deity science game. Egypt is fun if you want to spam wonders.
Of course, Poland is straight up good at everything with those free policies. I don't think the dev team realized just how good that UA is when they wrote it up. It's much better than it seems at first glance.
