Civ V Launch Fix January 3,2025
I spent hours uninstalling and reinstalling Civ V trying each of the fixes offered in this Discussion. NONE of them worked. Then on my 7th reinstall I decided to try something new: Press PLAY > game did NOT start > RIGHT CLICK "Properties" and select "Verify Integrity of Game Files" > Two files were not validated or whatever and will be reacquired > Press PLAY > game starts each time now.

I wish I had done this hours ago instead of wasting hours on all the other "fixes." Try this BEFORE you try any of the other suggestions. This is with a FRESH reinstall of the game AFTER a complete uninstall AND "Restart" NOT a shutdown and startup.

This is not working for me. does speed up the failure to launch and return to option to press play which fails.

select civ 5 properties goto advanced launch options and type in -DX12 with win10 and my graphics were set to max.

THANK YOU for mentioning this. For me, I am using Windows 11 Pro. I apologize for not mentioning that in my OP.

And again for my fix it was a straight up FRESH reinstall of Civ V AFTER an COMPLETE uninstall AND "Reboot." NOT simply a "Shutdown" and then restarting.

Reinstalled the game, pressed PLAY, game did not start, then right clicked Civ V and selected Properties then Verify Integrity of Game Files. It said two files were not validated or some such language and that they would be reacquired. I then pressed PLAY again and the game started right up and continues to start right up.

I hope you find a fix soon.

I've tried many methods, and now I’ve found a fix! I’m using Windows 11 24H2.
I solved the issue by installing the NVIDIA app, then launching Civ V from the "Graphic" menu in the side menu of the NVIDIA app and hitting Play.

When 2K screws things up they really screw things up. It is amazing to read that there are so many different 'solutions' to the problem THEY caused. Maybe I just got lucky that my solution was so easy and simple and did not require the deletion and renaming of files.

I'm glad to read that you found a solution for your game. It did not occur to me to mention that my device is powered by a Ryzen 7 which may be why my 'fix' was so straight forward. Wasn't Civ V designed around the AMD chipset? Or was that just Beyond Earth?

Happy conquering!

Verifying the integrity of game files (6 of mine were not valid and were reacquired) sorted it for me, many thanks Bob.

This unfortunately seems to be a temporary solution, I booted up the DX11 version using Nivdia App, which worked, but somewhere during the game, it crashed and for some reason after that the game either doesnt launch or it launches the DX9 version, which doesnt she the terrain and units in the game, and all icons that remain visible get dragged all over the place

Dude! I can't thank you enough. I typed -dx12 in advanced launch options and it opened. The bad thing is that my money was going to be wasted because I passed the return period, thank you :D

but restarting doesn't actually fully re-initialise the system?
idk if I'm reading into that too much, but it sounds like you have it backwards as to which is the more complete and "proper" way to do it.

not that I actually think it matters in this situation anyways...

I've tried multiple reinstalls, -dx12, validating files, deleting the intro movies, deleting executables and redownloading them, running dxsetup & vcredis, using the Nvidia app to drop all settings to low and launching(same effect as on max), and more

None of which has gotten me past the intro movie on startup

WIN 11, Intel CPU, 3050 RTX

Any help would be a godsend as when I reached out to the Devs for support they legit told me CIV 6 was on sale.
