Civ V not launching
I'm so fed up of this s**t. Every day it's the same damn problem. I tried all kinds of fixes, sometimes for hours. Yesterday I got it to work great after re-installing this and that incl. the game itself. Today, it won't start again.
I'm so utterly pissed off right now, smoke is coming out of my ears.
We pay good money for the games we like to play and it really rags my ass that Steam can't or simply has no desire to fix these issues. This "we have your money, now you are on your own" attitude, does not fly with me. I will get on to Steam support right now and give them a piece of my mind.
I think the only way to get some results is to bombard Steam directly. Go to Help>Support
and let the people now that you are not a happy camper neither.
Power comes in numbers, eh!!!!

try this: This worked for me
1. Navigate to C:\User\Documents\My Games
2. Right Click on the My Games folder, select Properties
3. Deselect "Read-only", press Apply and OK

If your game is installed in C:\Program Files (x86)\... I would suggest moving it away from that directory. The Windows security system often interferes with proper functioning of games. It pulls neat tricks like automatically setting folders in that directory to "Read Only".

I've had Steam & ALL games installed in a separate SSD drive for years, and experienced none of the recent launch/failure to update tribulations mentioned in these Civ5 threads.

I tried every advice on this forum, well, just about, lol.
I clean installed Steam, Civ V and DXsetup. The game would still not start from Steam.
I remembered a post which suggested to start the game from the desktop icon.
The screen went black, nothing for two minutes, so I hit the space bar and behold, the game launched. I have logged in and out and started the game numerous times since. Flawless.
Maybe this will work for you. I run Win 11, direct X 9 for the game.

Tried a lot of things, but this is what worked for me:
1-Go to the installed folder, right click on properties, then you will see that the “read only” checkbox is checked, don't touch it yet.

2-Back to steam, run the game, it should show the update executable, then go back to the folder, uncheck “read-only” and apply the changes (remember this step needs to be done quickly)

3-Then the message in steam about updating the executable should change to directX update and auto update, and the problem should be solved

Do you have to do this every time you want to play the game?
