Your tech path to victory
So I'm just getting back into the game, having bought the dlc's while they were on sale. I was wondering what tech path people use to give them an edge. I'm still feeling the game out so any advice would be appreciated.

pottery first to get shrines, if you dont you give yourself a disadvantage with faith

Pottery first (unless playing as Ethiopia)
Archery if playing on Immortal and Below for Temple attempt (if on diety I don't bother because the chance of getting the Temple of Artemis is pretty much 0)
Animal Husbandry then Bronze Working to see Horses and Iron for city locations

Whatever techs I need for important resources I'll get soon (if there's a single deer tile 3 spaces away, I don't get trapping yet. Same with Calendar crops and Stones)

Writing for Libraries

Sailing for Trade Routes and coast exploration

Trapping, Calendar, Masonry if needed

Philosophy for National Collage

Construction for Compositbows and Colosseums (since this is around the time happiness can start to become an issue)

Then I go either Straight for Metal Casting, if my cities have bad production and I'm still keeping up in techs fine.
Or go for Education for Universities to catch up in Science (aiming for Civil Service FIRST along the way to it for food)

From there, it's more just about what you think you'll need depending on what you're trying to do.

I don't have a really specific tech order, but I try to build the National College early, and other than that I just try to grow my cities as large as possible.

If my capital is on a river I like to build Temple or Artemis, and if its not on a river I go for Hanging Gardens. (actually I like to get both, but that's seldom realistic) The extra food either of from these two wonders will give you a lot of population growth (it's ridiculous when you get both) and that translates into science. You could do the same sort of thing with Petra or Colossus by dedicating the extra trade route to sending food back to your capital.

I usually play with mods and it changes some things, but in the default game the only two techs I feel are important enough to include in any approach is Education and Industrialization. I will always go to Education once I get the required base techs for connecting luxuries. Once I enter Renaissance, it is usually a push to get an Ideology going.

Outside of those two techs, I don't have a set plan.

Pottery, Writing, then Mining.

Afterwards, get whatever tech you need. It will depend. For instance, Babylon and Korea will want to rush for Education, where as Incans might want to beline Construction.

Sometimes it depends on what your surrounding area looks like. If you're in a hill haven, it would be best to have mining to utilize production. But I always start with pottery and then calendar. Being able to build improvements on your resources as fast as possible is key to getting ahead, at least for me.

Mess around and see what fits you!

I Always go to the "Science Techs" first, to get library, university, public school.... It makes easier to get the other techs...

I don't worry too much about science to start with. For me,early game I'm focussing on getting faith and as many wonders as I can. By renaissance i'm typically about 10 points behind the leader and last. Thats when I go into overdrive, having completed aesthetics I move through rationalism and patronage for the city state science bonus. No big deal to miss porcelain tower, but don't do any more research agreements with whoever gets it. However, Hubble is a must. Rocketry precedes it and by then I'm close to if not no 1 in science. This is where that early work on building faith pays off as you can spring great scientists if you need to, or perhaps a great engineer to make sure you nail Hubble. Most of my victories are science.
