As for that 0/3, the 0 is how many trade units you have alive, and the 3 is how many trade units you can have in total. Researching more technologies will boost that cap, as will building certain wonders- Colossus and Petra each add one.
tradition game - build granaries in your cities for internal trade routes so can send food from/too recieving early growth. (Cities grow quicker)
liberty game - send to other civs for science and gold boost or internally if u need say a production city to grow quicker too work tiles for hammers.
Only the sender city needs a granary not the recieving city for internal trade routes.
watch out for barbs if u are sending trade routes make sure camps are cleared or are directed away from high barb areas or players if u have early war with them the routes can be pillaged! By hovering over the desired route u can see which path the caravan takes before u confirm the route.Sometimes safer routes early game are more beneficial than more lucrative routes that are more difficult to protect from barbs and other players. If the route gets pillaged its a waste of production rebuilding a caravan.
