Is there a limit to population?
What is the max city size and total population a civilization can have?

As far as I know, there is no limit - theoretically. The only problem is food. Even if you use all available city tiles for food production and have no single expert in the city, after some time your city will meet the point it can't grow anymore, because there is not enough food for every citizen. From this point on, growing becomes impossible, or your people will starve. I can't remember when exactly this happens. I think my biggest city was around 70. But I have read of people who reached 100 and more.

It all depends on the starting position and on the buildings you have in the city. And on the bonus of your civilization and religion. And, of course, how long your game is.

You can also use caravans to send food.

i once tried to see how big i could get it by cheating, using the highest food outputs with all social policies and 12 maritime city states and various wonders like the temple of artemis and the hanging gardens; i did get the city to 124 before it stopped growing but i believe it can get better
