"One City" challenge bugged??
OK, I know I selected "One City" in advanced set-up, and when I conquered my opponents 1st city, it was instantly razed, which is what should happen in 1 city challenge. I conquered his 2nd (and last) city, and game over, I won,;;;but no badge for 1 city challenge.

Do you have to have a standard size map or above? I've seen that as a requirement in other accomplishments.

Did only having 1 opponent mess it up?

What went wrong?

Maybe you have to actually win using one of the actual victory conditions - and you would have one conquest if the first city you'd taken was his capital, but instead the game ended because you'd killed everyone, rather than with you achieving a victory condition.

You have to win only using one city. I choosed Pocatello, because his expansion border bonus makes more easy. Do not construct more cities and do not conquest other enemy cities. If you do, razed then. Begin and end the game with one city. Hope you can now!

Same thing happened to me. It turns out, cities don't instantly raze, so however briefly, you owned more than one city, without yet having won the game. To fulfill the conditions of this badge, you can't capture cities. I did a culture victory to earn it.

Well, I'd count that as a bug then, since the automatic razing is designed to keep you with only 1 city. Would seem that a domination victory is impossible with this bug,

I used Venice to get this achievement. Venice's ability means that you can't make settlers, and even if you get a Great Merchant of Venice, the "buy city-state" option is always grayed out. Moreover, with Venice's UA you get twice the trade routes, which is helpful.

But yeah, one-city culture victory seems the way to go.

But a culture victory takes soooooooooo longggggggggggg. I won the domination victory before gunpowder researched. There MUST be a way, something in my set-up?

If you have the one-city option checked in advanced setup, then I would think there shouldn't be a problem getting the achievement no matter which victory type you go for.

the achievement should explain more, probably having puppet cities count as "more than one city"

Did anyone ever figure out if this was a bug or not? I had the one city option enabled and went for a domination victory and didn't get the achievement. The cities were destroyed instantly but when i destroyed my second capital it said i owned 3 capitals so even though it doesn't count towards culture and is destroyed the game still counts it for the achievement.
I was actually planning on trying for the "win with one city" achievement...then on Turn 2 I found a Settler in some Ruins. T_T

Was not bugged. I got it couple of days ago, in diplomatic for fun. I was long one on the map, because England was highly annoing with spies. So..

Ah, yes, and no mods!
Guess you know that :)

Did a code dive, and it looks like this achievement is poorly implemented after the change that required you to own all capitals to win a domination victory. The trigger condition for this achievement (you only have one city) is only checked once, at the very moment you win. It looks perfectly possible to have the world's biggest empire, get just one turn away from, say, a diplomatic victory, then give away all your cities except for your capital and still get the one city victory achievement.

Conversely, due to when the achievement check is done, if you capture the last enemy capital, you cannot get this achievement. Even with the One City Challenge enabled, you still "own" a second city at the time of the check, even though the city will be toast just a few lines of code afterward. This is also why it says you are making progress towards the domination victory condition- it increments your count of captured capitals before it deletes the city. As things stand, it is impossible to get the one city victory achievement via domination in BNW.

Now, if you're playing an older version, where domination only required you to be the last civ with their capital, you can win via domination- flatten or otherwise remove all the other capitals save one, then get an allied civ or city state to do the final plink of damage. It's helpful if the capital you save for this purpose belongs the the last civ to take its turn, so it can't heal up before the great plinking.
