ships can't attack coastal city?
I can´t find the reason why my ships can't attack a costal city. I´m using melee ships, ironclads to be more specific. Does anyone know why?

ZoC on a nearby enemy ship?
Are you sure the city borders a coastal tile?

You should be able to...

ZoC?
But yes, they were coastal cities. I tried to attack 2 cities, and I believe once I was able to get an attack in (with a sea beggar), but I don't understand the conditions.

Zone of Control. One of your own units can only move one tile adjacent to an enemy unit.

Um, are you sure that your melee ships are directly adjacent to the city? Melee units can only attack adjacent tiles.

Yes, I am very sure. I would take a screenshot for you, but I already lost that campaign, so I can´t. Next time it happens, I´ll make sure to do that.

I'm pretty sure melee ships can't attack anything on land.

Attack and conquer.

I know this is an old thread but I'm not seeing the answer anywhere else, my ships can't attack any cities either. Not my caravel, not my frigate and not my privateer. I'm currently parked next to a barbarian encampment that is on an island only 2 tiles big. No matter where I sit I'm directly next to the city. I've been trying with other cities, costal cities other countries capitals and now barbarians. Nothing works. Even in the description the actual ship promotion screen it says something like, "does an extra 20‰ damage and steals 34‰ of the attack against cities in gold. This just a broken system in a broken game?

barbarian encampments are not cities and cant be cleared by ships you need at least a scout to clear the camp after your frigates have blasted them clear

Thank you, I didn't know that about barbarians. But still by frigate can't even attack the cities. Or any land units for that matter. However I played the civil war dlc and all of those ships, frigates and such were able to. Do I have to pick it as a peek when I level them up maybe?

galleas/frigates/battleships/missile cruisers can attack land units all other naval vessels cant (in bnw) except some unique units like dromans, but you have to be in line of site of the target, if a hill or mountain is in the way you may need a land based unit to be a spotter for your ships

You can bombard land units, but you can't move into the same tile, even if they're embarked. In some of the scenarios they'll let you destroy embarked units by sailing into them, but that's not the case in the regular game (not since G&K).

You can't disembark a frigate. They are sea vessels not land units embarked on a ship. I still have no idea why I can't attack cities. Must just be bugged.

ffs READ his post.
Frigates, just like galleass, battleships or any other non-melee ship CANNOT directly attack cities and/or other units. They CAN only use their bombard ability to attack units, no matter if these units are somewhere inland or embarked.
Scenarios are something enterely different though so its possible you had units in a scenario that could do stuff that are not possible in a regular game.
You attack a coastal city with a melee naval unit by moving it onto the tile with the city like you'd move it anywhere else. It's weird but that's the only way for them to attack. So use the action to move the unit and move it onto the tile the city is. Combat will comence as regular then.

I finished up a match this weekend as Denmark and my biggest war was primarily on the waters.
