Arabia and Venice are the two top contenders that popped into my mind first. Even a weak economic leader can be amazing if you get the right wonders though.
Arabia, Netherlands, and Venice are probably the ones best designed for good economies.

I don't see Arabia on the list. Is it because I am playing off of a friends shared library? He has all the dlc.

Arabia was one of the vanilla civs I think. It's been so long since I played vanilla though I'm showing my ignorance of it in other threads. If looking at leader names is easier for you than civilization names (like me) he is Harun Al-Rashid.

Portugal is also really good.

I'm good with an Economic America. Over 10,000 Gold, with 200 GPT, shortly after ending the industrial era, and a quite large army.

Venice

How about Germany, after they got the Hanse in BNW? The AI doesn't play it that way (actually it does for a while), but I bet a human could really run with it instead of going all homicidal warmonger.

Arabia probably. All the money of venice without the drawbacks.

Portugal and Venice have the best mechanic to be Economic Leaders, as long as you are not at war, they will be making bank.
Netherlands and Arabia have mechanic to make it an Economic Leader thru trading with other Leaders, which could hurt since if the other leaders are not trading (or have no money to give). Your economy falls behind too
Morocco has a Economic mechanic, but in the end it actually ends up giving your ENEMIES more money than you. (so very poorly designed) Altho they make epic bank during Golden Ages.
Persia is another really powerful Economic Leader, Golden Ages make a lot of money, and they have the longest Golden Ages.
Finally Greece has an extremely indirect form of Economy, In the end your Money will mostly end up in the hand of City States. Might as well save some money...

Overall, I would say Portugal and Arabia are the optimal choices for strongest economies
Venice and Netherlands come as insane 2ndary contenders, but have inherent flaws not found in the 1st two, Persia is a very strong and versatile nation as well.

Whenever I play as America, somehow my economy is not that good. I don't play it any different economically as another Civ.

OT: Welp, people beat me to it but I'm just going to be succinct.
Arabia - Bazaars and Caravans. Need I say more?
Portugal - Mop up those resources, send out Cargo Ships, send out Naus, and you'll be golden (see what I did there?).
Venice - ALL THE TRADE ROUTES. (If you're not coastal, you're missing out.)
Morocco - Trade route diversity and TONS of Kasbahs.

The Netherlands got a brief mention - they get a bit of a boost becuase of their strange UA. It's something that none of the other civs can match, an economic driver that also generates happiness automatically. I also would mention Siam, again because their UA couples the economy to happiness. In Siam's case, you get trade benefits with CS's which if you invest back into CS's, multiplies your investment exponentially over time.
