Windows 10 Issues
Some users are experiencing problems with the game (and indeed lots of other games) after upgrading to Windows 10. The following steps have resolved it for most users:

Make sure you have the most up to date drivers available from the GPU maker. This means Intel, AMD or nVidia, not your system OEM. OEMs are rarely up to date with the drivers they provide.

Check that Windows hasn't mysteriously made parts of your user folder ("My documents" etc) read-only, for mysterious and unexplained reasons.

Either uninstall and reinstall the game, or verify game files.

Make sure the executable is not set to any compatibility mode, or run as administrator. If that doesn't work, try enabling those options instead (but they shouldn't be necessary.

Some people have reported needing to run one or more of the redists that come with the game affected (such as a vc redist and directx); you may have to select a 'repair' option when you run them.

There is a separate pinned thread about the error 2 problem after the Win10 anniversary update. That appears to be a purely Steam issue with the update, and reporting it on these forums (after all the many who have so far) isn't going to resolve it any faster.

Most likely overheating.
I have tried a bunch of these solutions. Everytime I run the game, It will work, until I try to load my last quicksave. Does anyone have a solution for this? I already tried to verify game cache, etc. :steamfacepalm:

UPDATE: It keeps saying the Microsoft C++ Runtime error

Hi. The game has started after deleting video files from <path-to-game>\Assets\DLC\Expansion and <path-to-game>\Assets\DLC\Expansion2 (*.wma and *.wmv).
Hope it will help not only for me.
OMG! Thanks man, this fixed it for me! I tried everything else that was brought up here, but deleting the intro movie files from Gods & Kings and Brave New World finally fixed it and I can run the game in DirectX 11 again! :-)

Ok, so my boyfriends Civ V will not work. He has tried at least two of these problem solving comments but none of them work. When he clicks play on the game it brings him to which one to choose. No matter which one he chooses it pops up with a black screen for a second and then goes away like the game wasnt even running at all. It continues. The sad thing is is that he was playing yesterday. YESTERDAY. Someone please help out with it. I would be very greatful. Thank you.

Did he delete the intro movies of the last two expansions like described three posts above yours?

It works for me :steamhappy:
This thread is a bad joke. I just got a new puter and Civ kept locking up. After wasting a bunch of time trying the posted fixes, I found out that the problem was Steam all along. Play in Offline mode and works fine. Thanks for wasting my time trying to fix the problem of Steam wasting my time. What a joke.

So i have done everything on the list, excpet change documents off read only, because no matter how many time i do it it still stays. i can actually play the game but i get random crashes.
video locks up and i still have sound but as soon as you press escape the dam thing closes.
seems to be a pretty poor show. was super keen on buying the rest of the civ games but i think ill give it a miss now.
If those problems are a result of the read-only files, then it's hardly the game's fault that the OS has made files read-only. Just unchecking the readonly property won't do it - you need to give your user account "full access" permissions.
I am having an issue with said read-only files where, even though my user has full-access, after unchecking the read-only option and applying the change, after reopening the options there are still read-only files. Could someone provide some insight on this problem please?
After playing for an hour or so I get the "windows has encountrered a problem" windo and it coses the game down, I have windows 10, the graphics are fine and all up to date, no issue with loading the game.
